The 62 resorts of Suriname

In Suriname, administrative units into which a district is subdivided are designated as ministries (area) . The 10 districts of Suriname are divided into a total of 62 departments.

Within the capital district of Paramaribo , the departments consist primarily of districts, in the other districts of a larger contiguous area, of villages, localities and old plantations. On average, a resort is around 2,600 km² and has around 8,000 inhabitants. Although all resorts in Paramaribo are small in terms of their area, the number of residents per resort is generally much higher here than in the sparsely populated inland.

The regional administration is regulated in the Basic Law of Suriname from Article 159. According to this, the departmental council is formally the highest body in a department. The council members, like the members of the district council and the members of the National Assembly of Suriname ( De Nationale Assemblée ), are elected for a period of five years.
