The official seat of the district commissioner |
Totness is the capital and a resort in the district of Coronie , in the Republic of Suriname .
The Friendship, which is directly adjacent to Totness, is the seat of the administration and the district commissioner (DC). The place has 2150 inhabitants (Census 2012) and is on the only road - the so-called east-west connection - between the capital of Suriname, Paramaribo and the border town to Guyana , Nieuw-Nickerie . Totness has an inn, a market, schools, churches and a connecting canal to the Atlantic Ocean .
Like various other places in Coronie, it owes its name to English and Scottish planters who established plantations here from the time of the English Protectorate (1799–1802) .
In Sranantongo , totness is called Frimangron , which freely translated means: land of the man freed from slavery .
