Tommy Thayer (2012)

Tommy Cunningham Thayer (born November 7, 1960 in Portland , Oregon ) is an American musician and guitarist who has been known as the lead guitarist especially since 2002 as the successor to Ace Frehley as "Spaceman" in the American rock band Kiss . He is the son of US Brigadier General ret. D. James B. Thayer Sr. and is married to Amber Thayer.

Career

After playing in several rock groups, Tommy Thayer and drummer Jamie St. James founded the group "Movie Star", which in late 1981 became Black 'n Blue . At this point St. James was already the singer of the band; other musicians in the group were Jeff Warner (guitar), Patrick Young (electric bass) and Pete Holmes (drums). Black 'n Blue released a total of four albums on the Geffen Records label between 1984 and 1989 , the last two being produced by Gene Simmons .

When Geffen canceled the contract with Black 'n Blue, Thayer left the band. He played in 1990 with "Harlow" (which released an album on "Reprise") and "American Man", he was also co-producer and guitarist on the album Doro , which Doro Pesch recorded in 1990 under the direction of Gene Simmons in Los Angeles. Thayer played in 1991 in the group "The Marx Brothers". Later that year he joined the Kiss tribute band "Cold Gin" with St. James, in which Thayer played Ace Frehley and St. James Peter Criss . In 1992, Spiro Papadatos, who played Gene Simmons and later featured in an advertisement as Simmons' doppelganger, joined "Cold Gin".

Kiss also became aware of "Cold Gin," and the group was invited to play at Paul Stanley's birthday party. A little later, Kiss founding member and bassist Gene Simmons offered Thommy Thayer to work as his personal assistant, and Thayer immediately accepted. Thayer at the time was a "girl for everything", making coffee, traveling the United States for Stanley and Simmons to book hotels and venues for the "Kiss Convention Tour", painting Paul Stanley's house, and so on. He later worked as a tour manager for Kiss.

Spaceman make-up

When Ace Frehley left Kiss in 2002, Thayer was the first choice as a replacement. Simmons and Stanley wanted to keep the classic look of the original cast and chose Thayer to wear the make-up of the "Spaceman" and to adopt his stage habitus . In March 2002, Thayer played his first show as a member of Kiss at a private party in Jamaica . In April 2002 he appeared on the 50th Anniversary Show of Dick Clark's Bandstand, where he again wore the Spaceman make-up. Since then Thayer has played on the "Kiss Symphony" show in Melbourne, Australia, on a mini tour through Japan, on the tour with Aerosmith, on the "Rock The Nation" tour in 2004 and various individual shows by Kiss, as well as on the "Kiss Alive" / 35 "tour through North America in 2009 and on the" Sonic Boom Over Europe "tour in 2010.

Thayer has also worked as a producer for various Kiss publications, including the DVD "Kiss - The Second Coming", the Kiss Symphony: Alive IV DVD and the "Kissology" trilogy. He also wrote two songs for the album Hot in the Shade with Gene Simmons Paul Stanley , Bruce Kulick & Eric Carr and he also wrote a song for the album Carnival of Souls .

Thayer was elected to the Board of Trustees at Pacific University Forest Grove, Oregon, in 2005 . In July 2007, he hosted the annual Pacific University Legends Golf Classic in Portland, Oregon, which raises funds for Pacific University Athletics.

In 2008 Thayer brought out his own series of amplifiers at Hughes & Kettner .
