Detroit Rock City is the title of a compilation album that contains the music for the 1999 film of the same name .
background
The idea for this film goes back to 1995 when Carl Dupré began working on a script. The story covered was about four young men trying to get tickets to a sold out Kiss concert. Barry Levine introduced Gene Simmons to the Dupré script, Simmons won over New Line Cinema's boss Mike DeLuca for the idea, and the company donated $ 15 million to produce it.
Since the film planned a concert scene with Kiss, the band, at that time consisting of Gene Simmons , Paul Stanley , Ace Frehley and Peter Criss , re-recorded the eponymous song Detroit Rock City in a small studio. The resulting title was structurally largely the same as the original version from 1976, but sounded heavier and thunderous than the original. Because the song got a rather rough character through the live recording (all musicians played together in one room during the recording), it was replaced by the original version for publication on the soundtrack album. The newly recorded version ( Detroit Rock City '98 ) was only used in the film, the sound changes compared to the original are not reflected in the background noise of the concert atmosphere. In addition to the title song, the band also provided the song Shout it out Loud for the soundtrack, and with the help of Bruce Kulick (bass) and Steve Ferrone (drums) and a 30-piece orchestra , Paul Stanley recorded the song Nothing can Keep Me written by Diane Warren From You , which also appeared on the album as a Kiss song.
The title Surrender was re-recorded for the film by Cheap Trick , but the use of this new version was discarded and the well-known live version of the song appeared on the album instead. Surrender '99 was later released by Cheap Trick as a free download from the band's website.
In addition, numerous well-known rock songs from the 1970s were used for the album, either in the original version or as a cover version by prominent artists at the time of publication. So took Marilyn Manson , Everclear , The Donnas and Pantera songs by AC / DC , Thin Lizzy , Kiss and Ted Nugent on, David Bowie , The Runaways , Van Halen , Black Sabbath , The Sweet and Thin Lizzy were next to Kiss and Cheap Trick with own pieces.
The soundtrack was released on August 3, 1999, the first single was Everclear's cover version of The Boys are Back in Town .
