Iron Man is a song by the British metal band Black Sabbath . It is a single from the 1970 studio album Paranoid . The song was written by Ozzy Osbourne , Tony Iommi and Bill Ward , and the lyrics were written by Geezer Butler . In July 2000, the band received the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the song . The song is one of the classics that are an integral part of the band's live performances.

Despite the title, the name Iron Man does not refer to the fictional superhero of the same name . Ozzy Osbourne introduces the song with the heavily distorted words "I am Iron Man!" The song reflects a change in the themes of the songs and shows the band's increased interest in science fiction with its end times scenario . The text is about a man who invented a time machine and who, after traveling through time, realizes that humanity is facing the apocalypse. A magnetic field transforms him into a person made of iron, the "Iron Man". After no one wants to hear his warnings, he takes revenge by killing people. He initially tries to do good, but does evil.

The record cover shows the band logo in white letters against a black background and a red-colored picture of Ozzy Osbourne during a live performance. The single was released in 1971, with Electric Funeral on the b-side . The album version is longer than the single version at 5:56 minutes.

In the following years the song was released several times on best-of compilations and on live albums. It was created by numerous artists gecovert , including NOFX , Marilyn Manson , The Cardigans or Spock's Beard . Parts of the music for murder in the brothel from the German Oi! -Band Herbärds on.

The well-known Tag Team Road Warriors used the song as performance music, but only outside of the WWE . Only the beginning was changed from “I am Iron Man” to “We Are Iron Men”.
