Ray Gillen

Ray Gillen (* 12. May 1959 in New York City , New York ; † 1. December 1993 ) was an American hard rock - singer .

Life

Gillen grew up in Cliffside Park , New Jersey . His main musical influences were rock bands from the 1970s such as Bad Company , Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple . In the rock music scene , Gillen mainly appeared in the late 1980s, after Tony Iommi saw him as a worthy successor to the singer Glenn Hughes , and made the Native American American an offer to join Black Sabbath . After a tour, Iommi first recorded the album The Eternal Idol with Gillen as a singer, but shortly afterwards had Tony Martin's vocal traces re-recorded. The demo recordings with Gillen on the vocal microphone were initially only distributed as bootlegs , but were released in 2010 on a deluxe edition of the album.

He later formed the band Badlands with former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Jake E. Lee , with whom he recorded three albums. He was also one of the chosen musicians for the all-star project Phenomena II (title: Dreamrunner ).

Gillen has worked as a guest musician for bands such as Savatage , The Cult and George Lynch .

Ray Gillen died in December 1993 from circumstances associated with AIDS and was buried in Bergen County , New Jersey .

In 1994 ex-Deep Purple and Black Sabbath musician Glenn Hughes organized a tribute concert in memory of the talented rock singer. Sebastian Bach and Paul Pescoe, the guitarist of the American singer Mariah Carey, took part in this concert .

In 1995 the debut album Sun Red Sun by the band of the same name was released, on which Gillen worked. His voice can be heard on four tracks on the album.
