Tyr (also in runic script TYR on the cover ) is the fifteenth studio album by the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath . It was released in August 1990.

Emergence

One year after Headless Cross , Black Sabbath went back to the studio in the spring of 1990 to record the self-produced successor. Stylistically, the album differed significantly from previous albums, it contained many dark keyboard passages by Geoff Nicholls . In terms of content, it was loosely based on Nordic mythology , which is also reflected in the album title Tyr .

Martin Groß wrote in Metal Hammer that Tyr was "less grippy in terms of the songs than its predecessor, but also not to be seen as an infusion, but rather captivates with the brilliance that emanates from the outstanding musicians who are at work here." These qualities made “ Tyr a record that perfectly maintains the balance between feeling and originality.” He awarded seven out of seven possible points. The album reached number one in the “Soundcheck” in the Metal Hammer with an average rating of the editors of 5.90 (out of seven).

In issue 43 of the German music magazine Rock Hard , "TYR" is described as a "fantastic and great album", which in parts sounds "demonic" and "dark", but also has Power Metal parallels. However, the album lacks a "revolutionary approach". "TYR" received 9 out of 10 points in the soundcheck.

Allmusic's James Chrispell writes in retrospect that with Tyr Black Sabbath sounded "as serious as it gets ". A scary approach mixes with “breaking guitar riffs”. It awarded three out of five stars.
