At the age of 16, Vinny met John Lennon at Record Plant Studios in New York City . He was looking for people to clap for the song Whatever Gets You thru the Night with Elton John on the studio recordings. This was followed by a brief collaboration with John Lennon. Soon after, Appice became the drummer in Rick Derringer's band , with whom he released two albums and one live album. The collaboration ended in 1977 and Appice released the album It's A Circus World in 1978 with a band called Axis. In 1980, he finally replaced Bill Ward at Black Sabbath during the tour to the album Heaven and Hell and recorded the album Mob Rules with the band after he had previously done Ironically, Ozzy Osbourne had already canceled. But when Ronnie James Dio left the band, Appice followed him and founded the band Dio with him . After he left there, he released an album of the same name with the band World War III in 1990. He then went back to Black Sabbath in 1991, which he left shortly afterwards. During this time the album Dehumanizer was released . He then returned to Dio for a few years. After helping out at Black Sabbath again in 1998 (for the first time with Ozzy Osbourne, instead of Ronnie James Dio as singer), he has been involved in many different projects since the turn of the millennium. In 2007 he went on tour with the old Black Sabbath line-up from 1980 under the name Heaven and Hell . In 2009 the band released their debut album The Devil You Know . In 2010, however, Ronnie James Dio died of stomach cancer, which caused Heaven and Hell to disintegrate. He is currently on a Drum Wars tour with his brother Carmine Appice and since 2013 he has also been on the road as a reunited Dio band of the eighties as Last In Line .
