Heaven and Hell was a collaboration between current Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, and former Black Sabbath members Vinny Appice and Ronnie James Dio, who died in 2010 .
background
The Black Sabbath record company was planning a box set with songs from the two phases in which Ronnie James Dio was the band's lead singer. This box set should also contain new songs if possible. Dio then met with Iommi and Butler. The collaboration even brought three new songs. Bill Ward took part in the rehearsals and demo recordings , but later stated that he would no longer participate in this collaboration. He was replaced by Vinny Appice . Appice replaced Ward during the Heaven and Hell tour in 1980.
The band was named Heaven and Hell after the first Black Sabbath album, which was sung by Ronnie James Dio. Tony Iommi justified this with the fact that the band is not the current Black Sabbath line-up. In addition, the band's choice of name had the advantage that you didn't have to play Black Sabbath classics like “Paranoid” or “Iron Man” if the band didn't feel like it.
Together the band went on a successful world tour in 2007. The quartet was accompanied by keyboardist Scott Warren. The first part of the tour took the band through North America . The concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on March 30, 2007 was recorded for live CD / DVD release. In the summer of 2007 Heaven and Hell played at European festivals and were one of the supporting acts for Metallica at the concert in Vienna on Rotundenplatz .
On February 12th, 2009 Heaven and Hell were confirmed for the Wacken Open Air 2009.
The new studio album, announced for 2009, was released in April 2009 with the title The Devil You Know with the line-up Dio, Iommi, Butler, Appice.
On May 5th, 2010 Heaven and Hell announced on their webpage that they would cancel the shows in Europe due to the stomach cancer disease Dios. The singer died eleven days later in Houston , Texas . On July 24, 2010, the remaining members made a final appearance under the name Heaven and Hell as a tribute show for Dio. Glenn Hughes and Jørn Lande helped out as singers .
Previous collaborations
The four members of the last lineup of Heaven and Hell played the Black Sabbath albums Mob Rules (1981) and Dehumanizer (1992). On the album Heaven and Hell (1980) Bill Ward plays drums. On the following tour, Ward was replaced by Vinny Appice. During the Dehumanizer tour, the band played the last two concerts with Rob Halford from Judas Priest as singer, because Dio did not want to participate as the opening act for this farewell concert by Ozzy Osbourne and left the band.
