Terence Michael Joseph "Geezer" Butler (born July 17, 1949 in Aston , England ) is a founding member and bassist of the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath . His nickname "Geezer" goes back to his teenage years .

biography

In the fall of 1967, Butler formed his first band, Rare Breed , with his school friend John "Ozzy" Osbourne . After a brief separation, the two musicians reformed in early 1969 with guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward in the Polka Tulk Blues Band , which was later renamed Earth , but was renamed Black Sabbath again because of an English group of the same name . The name was suggested by Butler, it comes from a horror film of the same name by Mario Bava starring Boris Karloff . Although Ozzy Osbourne is the band's lead singer, Geezer Butler wrote most of the song lyrics , often about satanism and dark customs.

In the early days of Black Sabbath Butler first played rhythm guitar , but Tony Iommi soon gave him to understand that he did not want to play with a second guitarist, so Geezer switched to bass. Butler is said to have been one of the first bassists to use a wah-wah pedal , for example at the beginning of NIB on the group's debut album Black Sabbath . This bass intro inspired many later bassists, including the first Metallica bassist Cliff Burton , who referred to Geezer Butler as a role model. Plus, Butler was one of the first to deliberately tune her electric bass down. He did the same to Tony Iommi, who had to have a low string tension due to an accident . Geezer tuned his instrument down three semitones like this . Tuning down is common in many heavy metal bands today.

In 1984 Butler left the group to form the Geezer Butler Band . After he had accompanied Ozzy Osbourne on a tour in 1988 and briefly returned to Black Sabbath in 1991, but wanted to quickly go his own way again, he released a few solo albums , and finally returned to the reunion tour with the British with Ozzy Osbourne and Tony Iommi to get on. In 2006 he founded the band Heaven & Hell with Iommi and the intermittent Black Sabbath singer Ronnie James Dio , which existed until Dio's death in 2010.
