Heaven and Hell is the ninth album by the British heavy metal band Black Sabbath . The album was released on April 25, 1980 via Vertigo Records .
Emergence
Heaven and Hell is the first album after separating from Ozzy Osbourne . He was succeeded by the former Rainbow singer Ronnie James Dio . Dio not only brought his very own singing style into the band, but also actively participated in the songwriting . With the new approaches, the band changed their style in a more melodic direction. Dio and Iommi had already written songs for Black Sabbath before the separation from Osbourne was formalized.
Originally, Geoff Nicholls was supposed to replace Geezer Butler on bass. Butler threatened to leave the band several times and was absent during the songwriting. After Butler returned to the band, all the songs were written except for Neon Knights . Nicholls then took over the keyboards and remained a guest musician of the band for the next 20 years without ever becoming a permanent member.
The album was recorded in 1979 at Criteria Recording Studios in Miami and Studio Ferber in Paris . It was produced by Martin Birch , who worked with Deep Purple, among others, and in the eighties also worked on several albums for the band Iron Maiden . Drummer Bill Ward stated that he can't remember the recordings on the album. His alcohol abuse at the time also led to the fact that he left the band during the following tour and was replaced by Vinnie Appice.
In 2009 Dio, Iommi, Butler and Appice were on tour under the name Heaven and Hell .
The cover artwork comes from the painting “Smoking Angels” by artist Lynn Curlee.
