Cozy Powell
Cozy Powell (* 29. December 1947 in Cirencester , England ; † 5. April 1998 in Bristol , England, bourgeois Colin Flooks ) was a British drummer , who especially in hard rock - and heavy metal - bands played.
Life
Powell began his musical career in 1965 with the brothers Dennis and Dave Ball. The group appeared under different names, for the first time as "The Sorcerers" during a few appearances in Frankfurt am Main . Soon after, the name was changed to "Youngblood" and a contract was signed with the Pye label. The group also worked with ex- Move bassist Ace Kefford for a single ( Ace Kefford's stand ). The Ball Brothers met Kefford during their other musical activities with the Yardbirds and Danny King's Mairfrair Set.
During this time Frank Aiello joined the group that was now called “Big Bertha” (1969–1970), “Beast” and a little later “Bedlam” (1972–1973). Officially, the group broke up shortly after the Bedlam album, but Powell always fell back on his former colleagues in the following years, be it for the following three solo singles or the later project "Hammer".
In 1971 he joined the Jeff Beck Group for two albums .
This was followed by a tour in Germany with "Big Bertha". Excerpts from the tour have meanwhile been published on CD . His solo single Dance With the Devil , released afterwards, reached number 3 in the British charts and number 4 in Germany in 1973. Other chart singles were Na Na Na (Germany: number 16) and The Man in Black (number 24), the latter an instrumental piece like Dance with the Devil .
The aforementioned titles were not released on LPs . They are now considered to be rare collectibles that are occasionally available on CD samplers. All three singles (A-sides) are included in newly mastered versions on the sampler Dynamite - The Best of Glam Rock .
Due to the lack of further commercial successes of two of the band projects he had initiated, Bedlam and Cozy Powell's Hammer, he left the music business for a short time in the mid-1970s and drove car races, including Formula Ford .
In 1976 he joined Ritchie Blackmore's band Rainbow , which he left in 1980 after four albums. Cozy Powell played with a number of well-known bands - with the Michael Schenker Group from 1981 to 1982, Whitesnake from 1982 to 1984, then in 1986 with Keith Emerson and Greg Lake as Emerson, Lake & Powell , then in 1988/1989 with Gary Moore and with interruptions at Black Sabbath from 1989 to 1995. He supported Peter Green on his successful comeback and the Judas Priest guitarist Glenn Tipton on his solo album. He also played a few demos with Blue Murder together with Ray Gillen , but left the band with this without recording an album.
Powell was a member of the Brian May Band , he played on May's second solo album Back to the Light and the tour that followed. He can therefore also be heard on the Brian May live album Live at Brixton Academy and was also part of the band on May's solo album Another World (1998). A tour was planned for the fall of 1998, but Powell was no longer to take part. His last recording was - according to Colin Blunstone - Losing You on the album The Light Inside by Colin Blunstone .
Powell was killed on April 5, 1998 in a self-inflicted car accident on the M4 , part of the European route 30 , near Bristol . He was calling his girlfriend Shari Reeve on his cell phone and lost control of his Saab 9000 in bad weather .
meaning
His style, playful and visual ( double bass and two hanging toms , each symmetrically arranged, two stand toms, snare , hi-hat , six cymbals ), with simple yet explosive solos, has influenced a number of heavy metal drummers. The author Matthias Penzel has interviewed Powell several times for magazines such as drums & percussion , Metal Hammer and F1 Racing and dedicated a short story to him. In 2016, Rolling Stone listed him as 50th of the 100 best drummers of all time .
