Peter Sarstedt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Eardley Sarstedt (born December 10, 1941 in Delhi , British India , † January 8, 2017 in Sussex , England ) was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist .

life and career

Sarstedt was born in what was then the British colony of India as the son of British colonial officials. After Indian independence, the family moved to England in 1954 ; the father, who had traveled earlier, died before the rest of the family reached England.

In the course of his career, Sarstedt wrote more than 100 songs. His greatest success was 1969 Where Do You Go To (My Lovely)? , a song that he directed to a Marie-Claire and was not only influenced by the burgeoning rock / pop movement, but also has strong elements of the French chanson . The song was a number one hit in Great Britain and also very successful internationally, it was also awarded the Ivor Novello Award for it. In 1998 he received a total of £ 60,000 in royalties for the song. Where Do You Go To (My Lovely) is used prominently in The Darjeeling Limited and especially in its “Prologue” Hotel Chevalier (both from 2007).

His subsequent song Frozen Orange Juice made it to number 10 in the British charts again in 1969, otherwise he was denied great commercial success in later years. Nevertheless, he released further albums until 2008. Noteworthy are the lyrical texts, whose stories always seem authentic (Beirut, Mulberry Dawn, Hemingway, Love Among the Ruins). The song The Last of the Breed from the album England's Lane from 1997 bears the subtitle Lovely 2 and again takes up the background story of his hit Where Do You Go To (My Lovely) about the main character Marie-Claire.

Before Sarstedt's career, his brother Richard (under the pseudonym Eden Kane) had become the idol of teenagers in the early 1960s. In the mid-1970s, his brother Robin also hit the charts. In January 2017, Sarstedt died at the age of 75 of progressive supranuclear palsy . He left behind his wife and two grown children.
