Glenn Raymond Tipton (* 25. October 1947 in Blackheath , West Midlands , England ) is an English heavy metal - guitarist , known as a member of Judas Priest .

biography

Tipton's first band Shave and Dry was formed in 1970. It consisted of Glenn Tipton (guitar, keyboard ), Pete Hughes ( vocals ), Barry Scrannage ( drums ) and David Shelton ( bass ). Just a year later, Tipton joined the band Merlin (1971–1972). In addition to Pete Hughes (vocals), Trevor Foster (drums), Frank Walter and Andy Wheeler (bass) were part of the line-up. Tipton took over the guitar and the keyboard here too.

From 1972 to 1974 Tipton played in the Flying Hat Band . There were two line ups here. In addition to Glenn Tipton (guitar and keyboard), Pete Hughes sang again, together with the other members of the band Merlin . The last line up consisted of Glenn Tipton (guitar and vocals), Peter Mars Cowling (bass) and Steve Palmer (drums).

Judas Priest

Tipton joined the band Judas Priest in 1974 and has been a member ever since. He is known for his complex, sometimes classically influenced solos . The two-part runs with the long-time second lead guitarist KK Downing - now replaced by Richie Faulkner - are characteristic of his style of playing . Together with Rob Halford and his former guitar partner Downing, Tipton is also responsible for the songwriting at Judas Priest.

Besides Ian Hill, he is the only member of Judas Priest to be heard on all 17 studio albums.

In 2018 Tipton no longer took part in the Firepower Tour because of his ten-year Parkinson's disease . He was replaced at his own request by the producer of the Firepower album Andy Sneap .
