Ian Hill (born January 20, 1951 in West Bromwich , England ) is the co-founder and bassist of the heavy metal band Judas Priest .

Life

Together with guitarist K. K. Downing , with whom he had previously worked musically in a band called Freight , he founded Judas Priest, a band that is still successful today. Glenn Tipton and Rob Halford didn't join the band until 1972 and 1974. Sue Halford, with whom Hill was dating at the time, suggested her brother Rob as his successor after singer Alan Atkins left. Since KK Downing's exit in 2011, Hill is the only remaining member who has been with Al Atkins from the early days to this day.

Although Hill is a co-founder of the band, he was never in the foreground at Judas Priest, nor did he write any songs. His bass playing is mostly limited to the basics, although complicated riffs and solos of him can be heard in older live recordings .

“He's a very talented and remarkable bass player. I like to say this because it is often overlooked. He plays tastefully and full of ideas, and always skilfully combines the drummer's play with that of the guitarist. […] Ian plays simple, effective lines - that's exactly what Judas Priest's music needs. "

- Rob Halford

Ian Hill has been married for the third time since 2006. From the two divorced marriages he has one child, a son born in 1980 and a daughter.

Hill initially played Fender jazz basses . In the 1980s he switched - like the guitarists - to the Hamer brand. Today he plays Spector basses. Spector makes an Ian Hill signature mockup. SWR products are used as amplifiers.
