Glenn Hughes (born August 21, 1951 in Cannock , England ) is a British rock musician. He achieved fame as the bass player for Deep Purple (1973–1976) and singer for Black Sabbath (1985–1986).

biography

Glenn Hughes' career began in 1969 as a bassist and singer for the British rock group Trapeze . Members included Mel Galley (guitar, Whitesnake & Phenomena ) and Dave Holland (drums, Judas Priest ). From 1973 to 1976 he was bassist and singer with the hard rock formation Deep Purple . Three studio albums were recorded during this time ( Burn , Stormbringer , Come Taste the Band ) before Deep Purple disbanded shortly before the death of guitarist Tommy Bolin in December 1976. Hughes' dynamic head voice , together with Jon Lord's bluesy organ, shaped the sound of Deep Purple during this period.

Other musical stations were the metal trailblazers Black Sabbath , where Hughes took on the role of lead singer in 1985 after Ozzy Osbourne , Ronnie James Dio ( Rainbow , Dio ) and Ian Gillan ( Deep Purple ) and was involved in this position on the album Seventh Star , Hughes & Thrall (with guitarist Pat Thrall ), Gary Moore , The KLF , John Norum and the Hughes / Turner Project (with Joe Lynn Turner ). Glenn Hughes worked again with Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi in 1996 and 2005 to record his solo projects The 1996 DEP Sessions and Fused . The album Fused , released in 2005, reached number 92 in the German album charts. Glenn was also involved in three of the four Phenomena projects produced by Tom Galley ( Phenomena I , Phenomena II: Dream Runner and PsychoFantasy ).

In 1991 Hughes and Asia keyboarder Geoffrey Downes worked together on demos for a solo album by Hughes. The recordings represent the new style that Hughes wanted to embark on at the time and are reminiscent of Michael Bolton , with a certain soul influence . It stayed with the demos, the recordings were only released in 1998 under the title The Work Tapes . In 1992, Hughes sang a solo album by Europe guitarist John Norum , entitled "Face The Truth". In the same year he took the solo path with the album Blues and since then has regularly released solo albums up to 2008, which sometimes sound funky or hard-rock depending on the mood. In 1995 the album Feel was released , on which guitarist Pat Thrall can be heard, with whom Hughes had already recorded the Hughes / Thrall album in 1982 . On Feel you can find rock with jazz, blues, soul and funk influences. That same year Hughes also had a few guest roles as a backing singer on Richie Kotzen's Wave Of Emotion album . The song Stoned , which can be found on this album, was later re-set to music solo by Hughes and can also be heard on his album Incense And Peaches, which was released in 2000 .

In 1998, the former Emerson, Lake & Palmer keyboardist Keith Emerson went on tour with Hughes and guitarist Marc Bonilla , but a studio album for this lineup never came off. In 2009, however, the live album Boys Club Live From California was released with recordings from the tour. Emerson can also be heard on Hughes' album The Way It Is (1999).

The main musical partner of Hughes' has been the Swedish guitarist Joakim (JJ) Marsh for many years since the album called "Addiction" (released in 1996). Since 2004, Glenn Hughes has also worked frequently with Chad Smith, the drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers .

In 2010 Hughes entered into a creative partnership with guitarist Joe Bonamassa , drummer Jason Bonham (including Led Zeppelin , UFO and Foreigner ) and keyboardist Derek Sherinian (including Dream Theater ), with whom he formed the band Black Country Communion . The group's debut album was released on June 16, 2010, the band's third and final album, "Afterglow", in October 2012. In March 2013, the band was officially disbanded after Joe Bonamassa left. Glenn Hughes had publicly accused Joe Bonamassa of lack of commitment to the band, and this loss of confidence ultimately led to the end of the band. In 2014 Hughes founded the band California Breed with Bonham and the guitarist Andrew Watt, which dissolved in January 2015 and which can be understood as a follow-up project to Black Country Communion.

In 2011 Glenn Hughes published his autobiography , entitled "Glenn Hughes - The Autobiography - From Deep Purple to Black Country Communion". Co-author was Joel McIver; Lars Ulrich wrote the foreword .

In April 2016, the band members of Black Country Communion announced plans to reunite the band in 2017. After a seven-year hiatus, Glenn Hughes released another solo album, Resonate , on November 4, 2016 . On September 22, 2017, the Black Country Communion album BCCIV was released.
