Woman from Tokyo (English for: 'Frau aus Tokyo') is a rock song by the British band Deep Purple and was released in February 1973 as the opening track of the studio album Who Do We Think We Are! and released as a single . The song with the catchy riff by Ritchie Blackmore is considered to be one of the group's big hits, which is still performed live today, but also as a "forgotten" and one of the most underrated songs by the band. Ultimate Classic Rock magazine listed Woman from Tokyo at # 6 in the Top 10 Deep Purple Songs .

Emergence

Woman from Tokyo was recorded together with Painted Horse in Rome in July 1972 in the Rolling Stones mobile for the new album. According to singer Ian Gillan, the title and the content of the song do not refer to a woman, but to the enthusiasm and expectation of the first tour in Japan (see Made in Japan ).

success

The song was considered the highlight of the album by critics. The single achieved consistently good rankings, for example chart position 6 in the Netherlands and 8th place in Greece.

Live performances

Deep Purple played the song in 1975 in a purely instrumental version as part of a Japan tour. This can be heard on the live album Last Concert in Japan (the melody was played as part of an improvisation by Jon Lord after Soldier of Fortune and incorrectly stated as a separate title on the LP). Since 1985, after the reunion of the classic Mark II line-up , the song has been an integral part of the live set with short interruptions. It was often played in the abbreviated form of an encore.

Cover versions

A first known cover version dates back to 1978, with Ritchie Blackmore as a guest musician, who performed the song live at the Marquee Club in London with Ian Gillan and the band Gillan . Other cover versions are from Rainbow and the Ian Gillan Band . In 2005 the hardcore punk band Murphy's Law played the song for their album Covered .
