Black Night (English for: " Black Night ") is a riff-heavy hard rock song by the British band Deep Purple . The song was released as a single in June 1970 and came up to number two in the British single charts, respectively. at number one on the Swiss charts , which is the most successful single of the group to date. On the occasion of the "25th Anniversary Edition" in 1995, the song appeared on the album Deep Purple in Rock .
Emergence
When Deep Purple presented their new album In Rock to those responsible in Harvest's record office in the spring of 1970 , the group was asked after listening to In Rock for a single release. Deep Purple had originally not intended to produce a single, because the prevailing progressive musical opinion at the time refused to produce singles or to remove them from the album. But under pressure from EMI , which owned Harvest, originally founded as an underground label, the De Lana Lea Studio was rented to record a single .
According to bassist Roger Glover , the creation of the song went as follows:
“We started trying around at two in the afternoon looking for a reef that we couldn't find. At eight we ran off to a pub around the corner and got drunk. Ritchie [Blackmore] and I left the others sitting there, went back to the studio, he took his guitar and just played something. That sounded pretty good to me. Ritchie said it was stolen from Ricky Nelson 's Summertime, so I said, 'Unfortunately we can't take that.' He asked, 'Why? Have you ever heard of it? ' And I: 'No.' So he said: 'Great!' "
After Ian Gillan's return from the pub, he and Roger Glover dealt with the work of a suitable song text. The new song had a chorus similar to that of Hush . They took the title Black Night from an older play by Arthur Alexander . After three hours of work, the black night recording was finished.
Live performances
The song found its way into the group's concert program after its release on June 5, 1970. It was mostly played as an encore , similar to Fireball later . Until the breakup of the Mark II line-up in 1973, it was an integral part of Deep Purple's live program. Concert recordings of the song were released on the live albums Live in Stockholm , Scandinavian Nights and Made in Japan , among others . On the occasion of the Deep Purple reunion (their so-called Mark II line-up ) in 1984, Black Night was again included in the live set lists in order to be performed live by Deep Purple's current line-up.
