Made in Japan ( English for: 'Made in Japan') is a double - live album of the British hard rock band Deep Purple (in the cast Mark II), which was published in December 1972 in Europe and in May 1973 in the US . At first it was only released in Japan (Live in Japan), but as Deep Purple was enjoying worldwide success with the album Machine Head at the time , the record company decided to release it globally.

The album is characterized by instrumental frenzy and long improvisations of the pieces by Machine Head . Made in Japan is widely regarded as the band's best album and a milestone in the history of hard rock and heavy metal . The guitar riff for Smoke on the Water contained on Made in Japan is probably one of the most played in rock.

background

The album was recorded on three evenings in August 1972 in Osaka and Tokyo . Most of the tracks on the album are taken from the 1972 studio album Machine Head. The text accompanying the CD version assures that the recordings have not been subsequently changed with overdubs .

All three concerts were also released on a 3-CD box in 1993. In 1998 a "25th Anniversary" CD was released with a bonus CD containing some encores that were not included on the originally released album.

In May 2014 a 9 LP box (alternatively also 4 CDs + 1 DVD + a 7 ″ single) was released with all three concerts in full length; The original analog tapes formed the basis of the new mastering.

Opinions and reviews

The album received mostly positive reviews from fans and critics.

  • Jon Tiven described the album in Rolling Stone (May 24, 1973) as follows: "... Made in Japan is Purple's definitive metal monster, a spark-filled execution of the typical Purple style."
  • Billboard wrote in the same year: "... this set only accentuates the group's already strong reputation." Best cuts: “Highway Star”, “Smoke on the Water”, “Space Truckin '”.
  • Tom Graves wrote in 1995 in The All-Music Guide to Rock : “… this double album… set recorded in Japan includes most of their best material… and pushes the metal envelope even further. Ritchie Blackmore is in peak form throughout. "
  • Ian Paice said in 1998: "It's the best these numbers have ever been played ..."
  • Jürgen Roth and Michael Sailer wrote the story of a band in the book Deep Purple: Made in Japan captivates with its “instrumental frenzy”, the “epic breadth and density of the pieces presented” and is considered the “ideal, sum and perfection of the seventies. Years hard rock idea ”.
  • Robert Pöpperl-Berenda wrote the following review in the German magazine Rock Hard : “The mother of all live albums is now almost 30 years old! What Purple's house and yard engineer Martin Birch (as is well known, he later took on this role at Iron Maiden) has conjured up with equipment that today no longer even meets the home recording standard, has never been exceeded. Even the fake live albums that later became fashionable with plenty of overdubs and canned food applause cannot keep up with Made in Japan . Most of the recordings come from the show in Osaka on August 16, 1972. Smoke on the Water , however, found its way to Made in Japan in the version from the previous day , because Ritchie Blackmore actually did the other two takes (the third evening took place in Tokyo instead) spoiled the opening riff. Completeists absolutely have to get the Triple CD Live in Japan , where almost all of the three shows can be heard. The highlight is of course Child in Time, which in this version should be included with every satellite that leaves our solar system. Aliens would then have a clear idea of the best possible music they can find on our planet. I was able to hear Child in Time in the Mk. II line-up (with Gillan and Blackmore), which I am sure to tell my great-grandchildren proudly too… ”. The magazine published its best list of 500 rock and metal albums in 2007. Made in Japan was ranked 39th here, making it the fifth highest-ranking live album on the list. Furthermore, no album by the band ranks higher on this list.
  • Farin Urlaub , singer and guitarist of Die Ärzte , describes Made in Japan as "the first rock moment in life".
