biography

Deep Purple, Ian Paice 1970

Before his father gave him his first drum kit at the age of 15 , he played the violin . Georgie And The Rave Ons was the name of the first rock 'n' roll band he performed with in and around Oxford . The band changed their name to The Shindigs in 1965 . Became known through appearances as the opening act for MI 5 , Ian Paice switched to this group when their drummer left the band. The MI5 took 1966 her first professionally produced single on. Shortly afterwards they changed their name to The Maze .

During a short tour of Italy , Ian Paice met Ritchie Blackmore , whom he met again shortly afterwards (mid-1967) in Hamburg . Since The Maze did not have the resounding success, Ian Paice and Rod Evans , the singer of the band decided to apply for an audition for the new band Deep Purple .

His involvement with Deep Purple continues to this day. While all band members of Deep Purple have now changed, Ian Paice has always stayed with the band. After the temporary end of the band in 1976 he played with Whitesnake (1979 to 1981) and Gary Moore (1982) as well as in solo projects by Bernie Marsden and Jon Lord . Paice was part of the Deep Purple Reunion in 1984, and has been a member again since then. In 2001 he toured Germany with Pete York . He also played with Paul McCartney .

His wife Jacky founded Sunflowerjam in 2006 , an aid organization which, for 10 years, raised money with concerts for alternative treatment methods, especially for cancer.

Instruments and style

In the times of Deep Purple, Ian Paice preferred Ludwig drums in different foil colors. At first he played in the configuration with a bass drum , hanging tom , two floor toms, snare , hi-hat and four cymbals , two of which were usually mounted on a stand, as was the small splash cymbal. In addition, Paice had installed a cowbell . Later he played a Ludwig drums, where he swapped one hanging tom for six concert toms (without resonance heads) and positioned the splash cymbal on the bass drum. Especially at Deep Purple's live performances, Ian Paice was able to prove his drumming skills, for example in the songs Mandrake Root , The Mule or Space Truckin ' .

Ian Paice, one of the few notable left-handed drummers, is known for his penchant for large dimensions. For example, he uses 26 "bass drums or a 24" crash cymbal.

Ian Paice is left-handed and accordingly his drums are built up mirror-inverted. Paice is also known for his fast play. For a long time there was even a rumor of “Crazy Foot”, according to which he was said to have played the intro of Fireball with a bass drum, for example . Ian Paice laughingly refuted this in interviews. A bass drum from the Keith Moon set of The Who was standing around during the studio recordings . He brought this in and played the piece with a double bass , because according to his own statements he could achieve the speed, but not the necessary pressure and thus the full sound with one foot. A second bass drum was only added live for a few pieces. Ian Paice has been using a Pearl double bass drum pedal since the 1990s.

In the 1980s, Ian Paice switched to Pearl brand drums ; his cymbals have been made by Paiste since the 1960s .

The Rolling Stone listed Paice as 21st of the 100 best drummers of all time .
