Slaves and Masters is Deep Purple's 13th studio album . It was released in October 1990. It is the only one in the band with singer Joe Lynn Turner .
history
Turner had joined the band in 1989, replacing Ian Gillan , who had previously been fired . Previously, the band wanted Jimi Jamison of Survivor involved, but he had other commitments.
The album peaked at number 87 on the Billboard 200 . A successful tour followed in 1991, especially in Europe.
reception
The Allmusic website gave 2 out of 5 stars. Alex Henderson called the record disappointing: "Even Blackmore 's input can't save this consistently disappointing CD, which only the most thorough collectors will want."
Götz Kühnemund from the German metal magazine Rockhard gave a much milder verdict in 1990. Although he describes Joe Lynn Turner previously every band kaputtgesungen have. The singer leaves a more than ambivalent impression after his stopovers at Rainbow and Yngwie Malmsteen . But Turner hits every note. But Kühnemund's verdict was that he would not fit in with a hard rock band like Deep Purple. Despite the soft and calm orientation of the album, it would have high quality rock / pop music that would disappoint fans of the harder faction. "Who knows what the record would have sounded like if the songs had been sung by Ian Gillan?" Kühnemund awarded 7 out of 10 possible points.
The online magazine Powermetal.de judges differently . In the context of a re-release together with the works "Purpendicular" and "The Battle Rages On", "Slaves And Masters" is rated as convincing. Especially the manual skills on the album are emphasized.
