Alois Spaniol
Alois Spaniol (born September 19, 1904 in Lisdorf , † January 1959 in Ettlingen ) was a German National Socialist , Gauleiter of the Saar area and mayor of Andernach .
Life
Spaniol was the son of Johann Spaniol and Anna, geb. Breinig; he had four younger siblings. In 1918, the teacher's son Alois Spaniol left the Saarlouiser Gymnasium in Obertertia , today's Gymnasium am Stadtgarten , and began training at the Merzig teacher training college, which he broke off after three years. He then earned his living in various unskilled professions, including as an emergency worker, as a pipe transporter and as a furnace man.
His political career began in 1923 during a Saar miners' strike, during which he was arrested and, according to his own account, was "repeatedly mistreated". He described this incident in 1925 at the Rhenish centenary and at the same time accused the "dictate of Versailles ". Then he got into National Socialist circles. The NSDAP he joined on 1 May 1931 with membership number 519608. In Lisdorf he became a local group leader. He also became a member of the SA and rose to SA troop leader in SA Storm 4/1/70 in Saarlouis. In 1932 he became district leader of the NSDAP in Saarlouis-Merzig. After Josef Bürckel had to resign from his position as Gauleiter by order of the government commission of the Saar area , since as a Reich German he was not allowed to represent the Saarland parties, Spaniol was appointed as Bürckel's straw man. With that Spaniol also became leader of the German Front (DF), which was supposed to unite the different national parties as a mass movement after an apparently dissolved NSDAP. However, Spaniol refused to dissolve the NSDAP. He therefore had a dispute with Bürckel, which had to be finally resolved by Robert Ley . This gave Spaniol an independent position as head of the German Front, but as a condition he was bound by Bürckel's instructions. In February 1934, Spaniol was finally ousted from both offices by Josef Bürckel after an interview with a Swedish newspaper damaged Spaniol's reputation. Jakob Pirro became the leader of the DF . Bürckel also ran a party exclusion procedure against Spaniol, which was unsuccessful. Spaniol, who had previously also been a leader in the Iron Brigade Spaniol (cover organization for the illegal SA) and was the editor of the Nazi publications Saar Front and German Front , held a position as Saar advisor in the Reich Ministry of Economics from March 1934 . After the annexation of the Saar area to the German Reich , Spaniol became mayor of Andernach on April 1, 1935 . He officially held the office until March 8, 1945. From 1936 he was a speaker of the Reich . During the Second World War , Spaniol did military service in the Wehrmacht and was mainly used in a propaganda company in various theaters of war. After the end of the war he was in the British internment camp in Recklinghausen from 1946 to 1948. After his release he lived in Ettlingen and worked in the wood industry.
The time of his death was researched by Gerhard Paul in 1985 and is January 1959, according to the information provided by the personnel department of the Andernach city administration.
His wife Gerda Spaniol was the head of the Association of German Girls in the Saar area.
