Come Taste the Band (English for: " Come on, taste the band ") is the tenth studio album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple , which was released in October 1975. The album went downin the band's historyas a co-production of Deep Purple's so-called Mark IV line-up and its long-term producer Martin Birch .

After Ritchie Blackmore left , Tommy Bolin took over the guitar at Deep Purple. Come Taste the Band is the only Deep Purple studio album that Bolin can be heard on.

background

Contrary to the note on the album cover, not all songs were recorded between August 3 and September 1, 1975 in the Musicland Studios in Munich . Because already in the period of June / July 1975 the band met with Tommy Bolin in the Pirate-Sound -Hallen in Los Angeles for jam sessions . Ritchie Blackmore was rehearsing with his new band Rainbow at the same time in rooms parallel to the halls . He offered the landlords enough money to have the halls for himself and his band alone. And although much of the song material for Come Taste the Band was created in the Pirate Sound Hall, the group avoided this information on the cover, instead referring to the later studio recordings in Munich.

After a promotional tour for Come Taste the Band, Hughes and Bolins' serious drug problems and the different musical ideas of the members put a strain on the cohesion of the band, which was already troubled. Lord and Paice therefore broke up the band in March 1976 after their last concert in Liverpool . It wasn't until 1984 that the album Perfect Strangers initiated a reunion of Deep Purple's Mark II line-up (their second band line-up).

Music genre

The album features a richer musical selection than previous albums by the band. In addition to driving hard rock songs like "Comin 'Home" or "Drifter", Come Taste the Band contains many funky and soulful influences. These were based on the influence of bassist Glenn Hughes and Deep Purple's new guitarist Tommy Bolin. This can be determined from the musical direction of the songs "I Need Love", "Dealer" or " You Keep on Moving ". The piece “Love Child” shows a fusion of Purple's stylistic devices from that time. The departure of Blackmore and the entry of Bolin brought the band into "musically freer waters".
