Guitar Hero ( German  , guitar hero ' ) is a video game series from the field of music games . In the game, the user should try to reproduce pieces of music that can be heard during the game on a special guitar controller as authentically as possible by pressing the appropriate buttons on the controller.

The game concept and the first two parts were developed by Harmonix Music Systems and published by RedOctane . In 2007 the rights to the series were acquired by Activision . Starting with Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock , all sequels of the game were developed by the in-house developer Neversoft .

In February 2011, Activision announced that it would stop production for the time being, as the development and production of the games had become deficit due to lower sales.

On March 20, 2014, the developers announced that the chargeable additional content had been removed from all online stores and was therefore no longer available. Content that has already been purchased can still be used and is not affected by this change.

Game concept

The supplied guitar controller of the first part of Guitar Hero for the PlayStation 2 . A 3: 4 scale replica of the Gibson SG .

After the player has selected a song, it is not only played back acoustically, but the notes to be played appear on the screen of the game console on a kind of bar, the so-called highway, which is supposed to represent the guitar neck with the individual strings. The user can play with the supplied guitar controller, which is modeled on Guitar Hero 1 and 2 of a Gibson SG and on Guitar Hero 3 of a Gibson Les Paul . This guitar controller simulates a real guitar with five different colored buttons as frets , a kind of toggle switch ( Strum Bar ) for striking the strings and a tremolo ( Whammy Bar ). While playing, the correct buttons on the guitar neck must be pressed (held) at the correct time and the "strings" on the body must be hit with the other hand. It is played for points and the favor of the audience.

There is a career mode in which you “play up” with your own band from below. Successful gigs are rewarded with virtual money, depending on the performance, which depends on how many points you have earned, from which new guitars, costumes, videos, songs etc. can be bought in a “shop”. If you manage to charge your star power bar by skillfully playing the guitar , you can pull the guitar (which contains sensors inside) upwards and activate a temporary mode that is particularly profitable and attractive to the public. The guitars for Guitar Hero come in different shapes and colors.

The games themselves offer an adjustable level of difficulty , which differs in the amount and speed of the notes to be played as well as the range of tones: If you only have to use the green, red and yellow keys as a beginner, the blue and then the blue keys appear with increasing difficulty orange added. In order to reach all notes from green to orange, it is necessary to move the hand on the guitar neck slightly, which makes handling even more difficult. The presentation offers a rocking comic look with different characters making music on a stage (initially in musty basements in front of a handful of people, later in full stadiums). The loading screens offer tips and anecdotes on how

  • "Your mom does not count as a fan!" ,
  • “Don't let the singer steal the show from you! Singers are egomaniac. " ,
  • “You need a refrigerator in the rehearsal room! That's more important than a bassist! ” Or
  • "Throw your underwear on stage! Oh wait, you are not yet of legal age. "

With some songs well-known rock stars like Ozzy Osbourne or Carlos Santana can be seen in animated form.

The original Guitar Hero was developed by Harmonix Music Systems and released for the PlayStation 2 in late 2005 . The video game developer Harmonix was previously responsible for some music games for the PS2, such as FreQuency and Amplitude . Both games, which did not achieve great sales success, were praised by critics and the trade press. The ability to use the controller like a musical instrument was already present in these games.

After its release, the game received awards for playful innovation and soundtrack and became a big seller. The game contained 47 rock and metal songs of various styles and eras by mostly popular performers, with some songs being found as cover versions in the game due to licensing conflicts with the music industry .

This game is the same as its predecessor and now offers a training mode and a multiplayer mode, where a guitar duet can be played or one player plays the guitar and the other bass. There are 64 new songs in the game itself. After the PS2 version, an extended version for the Xbox 360 appeared later, which received its own guitar controller, this time in the look of the Gibson Explorer . This includes some songs exclusively. In addition, it is possible to download some songs from the first Guitar Hero for an amount via Xbox Live . So far there are four Guitar Hero Track Packs with three songs each, each costing 500 Microsoft Points (equivalent to 6 euros).

Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock adds a co-op career mode for the first time, in which a slightly different setlist could be played together. In the also new "Battle" mode, an opponent has to be fought with various power-ups that make it difficult for the opponent to hit the marks.

For this part of the series, two prominent musicians were involved for the first time, who can be played as characters as well as compete in a duel against the player himself. These are Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Slash , the former guitarist of Guns n 'Roses . In 2010, Slash's former bandmate Axl Rose sued Activision for a total of $ 20 million in damages for negotiating with Activision prior to the game's release that Slash should not appear in the game.

Over 70 titles are available to the player to play, which can be expanded with bonus content. This option is available to owners of a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for a fee. Music labels and publishers, however, complain that the income generated from the online shop is bypassing them. The reason is that Activision concludes the contracts directly with the musicians / managers of the musicians, and there a song is rated in Guitar Hero as a promotional activity. Music labels and publishers have simply failed to secure the exploitation rights to the music for the use of "computers and video games" and are trying to renegotiate this in future contracts (360-degree exploitation / 350-degree contracts).

The game was developed by Neversoft for the platforms Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and for the first time also for the PC or Mac. The Aspyr developers are responsible for porting the PC and Mac.

As a result of the merger of Activision with Vivendi's game software division to form Activision Blizzard , the Guitar Hero games benefit from the extensive music catalog of Vivendi's subsidiary Universal Music Group .

During the 2009 Consumer Electronics Show , Activision CEO Mike Griffith announced that Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock had sales of more than $ 1 billion worldwide. This is the first game to exceed this mark.

The fourth part of the main series, Guitar Hero World Tour , offers the opportunity to play drums and sing in addition to guitar and bass. Matching new controllers (drums, microphone) are available. Furthermore, an extensive character editor (personalization of the game figure) is integrated. The online mode has been greatly expanded compared to its predecessor: Members of a virtual band can now be found online or two groups can compete against each other.

The track list in this issue consists of 86 songs.

The fifth part of the series is identical to its predecessors in terms of gameplay, except for small changes. What is new is that you can now design your band individually and no longer have to fill it with guitarists, bassists, drummers and singers. Now you can, for example, play with four guitarists or singers. Various new multiplayer modes have also been added, such as B. Momentum , in which the level of difficulty increases steadily if you play without errors, or falls if you miss several notes .

The DLC from Guitar Hero 5 is a few exceptions to that of Guitar Hero: World Tour compatible.

In Guitar Hero 6: Warriors of Rock the focus - as in Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock - is again on guitar-heavy songs. The song list also includes songs by Kiss, Def Leppard, DragonForce, Metallica, Muse, Slayer and Rammstein. Guitar Hero 6 clearly stands out from its predecessor, Guitar Hero 5, which tried to address the largest possible target group with songs that were more suitable for the masses. In Guitar Hero 6, the game principle has been expanded in the career to include additional powers that allow extremely high point yields or more protection against failure. The player goes through the story of 8 characters, each with one of these special skills and assigned to a broader musical genre. Later in the game, the additional powers can also be combined. Guitar Hero 6 also tells a story of myths and demons. As the last song, the player has to fight a metal creature to free the god of rock from his grave. You can choose 2 teams from all 8 characters to combine their powers. As soon as the god has been freed, one must tame the beast with him and have united all forces.

This game is aimed mainly at fans of the band Aerosmith , 30 of its 41 songs are by the group. The remaining eleven songs were selected by Aerosmith, including artists such as RUN DMC, Lenny Kravitz and Stone Temple Pilots. The gameplay was taken from the third part of the main series and adapted to the title list. The band has now made more income from sales of the game than from the proceeds of one of their albums.

Guitar Hero: On Tour on a Nintendo DSi

The offshoot for the Nintendo DS continued the gameplay of the third part of the main series. As a replacement for a guitar controller, the game was delivered with a special guitar module that had to be pushed into the Gameboy Advance slot, as well as a pick for the touchscreen . Instead of five stroke keys, only four are used here.

Guitar Hero: On Tour received average mediocre reviews from the trade press, with the multiplayer part often being praised and the periphery “Guitar Grip” criticized. The gaming platform gamona.de judges: “The fully developed multiplayer part is clearly the greatest strength of portable fighting. However, the fun of the game suffers from the poor sound quality, admittedly also due to technical reasons. ”(Rating: 77%). Gamecaptain.de gave 66% a rating: "The Guitar Grip is not an equivalent replacement, although it is already going in the right direction." However, IGN.com rated the game with 9 out of 10 points, which corresponds to "outstanding", and awarded the "IGN.com Editor's Choice Award".

Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades

Guitar Hero: On Tour Decades is the second Guitar Hero game for the Nintendo DS .

It is also played with the Guitar Grip and, compared to Guitar Hero: On Tour, has different and newer songs, as well as slightly improved graphics.

Guitar Hero: Metallica is mainly aimed at fans of the band Metallica and their style of music, Metal . The game features 31 Metallica songs and 21 songs specially selected by Metallica by other artists, including bands like Judas Priest , Slayer , System of a Down and Mastodon . The game itself brings a slightly revised design to the previous Guitar Hero World Tour and a new level of difficulty for the drums. For most of the songs, this level of difficulty, "Expert +", can be selected in order to be able to play back original double bass parts with a second kick pedal (available separately). Both the band themselves and guest stars King Diamond from Mercyful Fate and Lemmy Kilmister from Motörhead are playable characters.

In addition, you can play all the songs that you could only play with guitar before with friends or over the Internet (e.g. XBox Live) with other players as a band.

Band Hero

Band Hero is an offshoot of the Guitar Hero series. In this game there are mainly songs of the genre pop-rock. Performing for the first time (at the same time as Guitar Hero 5) a band can consist of 4 guitars, 4 singers etc. In story mode you meet stars from the current scene (e.g. Taylor Swift ). Most of the difficult guitar songs in Band Hero reach an intensity of 5/10, only the drums are more demanding in many songs.

Others

  • In early 2007, the game developer and publisher RedOctane , who owned the rights to the game series, was bought by Activision . Starting in 2007, the development of new Guitar Hero games was transferred to the Activision developer studio Neversoft , while Neversoft is best known for the Tony Hawk skateboarding games. Harmonix then worked on the similar conceived game called Rock Band , which was released in the summer of 2008 under the distribution of Electronic Arts .
  • The popular American cartoon series South Park satirizes Guitar Hero . The consequence Guitar Queer-o from the eleventh season includes this satire or parody , be pulled through the mud in the behavior of video recorders and would-be rock stars.
  • In the film All Inclusive , Dave, who hides the fact that he was involved in the production of the game, defeats hotel employee Sctanley in a Guitar Hero duel. The exaggerated seriousness of some fans of the game is caricatured not quite as strongly as in the South Park parody.
  • The creative inventor Toni Westbrook created a Guitar Hero variant for the home computer Commodore 64, which is still extremely popular today . In this game, called Shredz64 , you use the original Guitar Hero guitar controller, connected to the C64, and play popular melodies from C64 games, which are displayed in the appropriate 8-bit optics and implemented using the MOS Technology SID of the home computer.
  • For the Commodore Amiga home computer series there is a variant called "Tracker Hero", which can be played on the Amiga either via keyboard, CD32 pad or Guitar Hero controller via PSX64 adapter or the "PSX2Amiga" adapter for Amiga. So-called MOD files are used as music files.
  • The Universal Music Group is already actively using the Guitar Hero series to market its own music worldwide.
  • In the British "Gamer's Edition" of the Guinness Book of World Records, a record was set for the first time in Guitar Hero continuous play of 72 hours and 17 minutes.
