John 5 , real name John William Lowery , (born July 31, 1971 in Grosse Pointe , Michigan ) is an American musician . Lowery became known to a wide audience primarily through his collaboration with Marilyn Manson , in whose band he played lead guitar from 1998 to 2004.

Life

Lowery began playing the guitar at the age of seven. His influences were initially bands like the Monkees , but later also KISS and musicians like Jimi Hendrix .

At the age of 18 he went to Los Angeles to become a session musician. Due to its reputation for working quickly and cheaply, Lowery was initially often hired for commercials and television productions (including Baywatch ). He made his first major live appearances with artists such as John Wetton ( Asia ), Wilson Phillips , Rick Springfield and the rap group Salt 'n' Pepa . For a tour with kd lang , John won a casting against 2000 other guitarists.

In 1996 he got the first opportunity to play for Marilyn Manson. Since Lowery did not appear in time for the performance date, the guitarist Zim Zum ( Timothy Michael Linton ) got the job. Lowery then played the industrial metal album Voyeurs with Rob Halford in 1997 under the band name 2wo . In 1998 Lowery went on tour with ex Van Halen singer David Lee Roth . After the tour, Lowery got a second chance to work for Marilyn Manson and joined the rocker's band as a guitarist in 1998 . From Manson Lowery got his stage name John 5. The name is the film number 5 lives! borrowed. Warner later claimed the number 5 was only the fifth member of the band. The collaboration with Manson lasted until 2004 and included several tours and recordings for various albums. Since leaving Manson, Lowery has pursued solo projects as well as playing guitar again for various artists (e.g. with Rob Zombie on the Ozzfest tour 2005). He is also working on an album with his band “Loser”. However, this project was dropped by the label due to John's cancellation for the tour, as these dates conflicted with the tour dates of Rob Zombie. John 5 is now playing permanently with Rob Zombie as a guitarist. In 2012 he released his sixth solo album, God Told Me To , for which Rob Zombie created the cover, and was the composer for Zombie's horror thriller The Lords of Salem .

style

The guitar playing of Lowery is strongly influenced by styles that can be found mainly in country musicians. Lowery transports this style of playing in Hard Rock and Heavy Metal by increasing the tempo to an extreme extent and alienating the sound of his guitar through strong distortion and other effects. Also unusual for a heavy metal guitarist are the preferred Lowery electric guitar type Fender Telecaster . In 2004, Lowery received three personal signature guitars from Fender . The Fender J5 Telecaster (electric), J5 Telecaster Bigsby and the J5 Acoustic (acoustic).
