Social Distortion (also: Social D ) is an American punk rock band influenced by rock 'n' roll , rockabilly , blues and country . Although the band can boast relatively few studio releases - just seven studio albums up to the 40th anniversary of their stage presence; four of them within the eight years from 1988 to 1996 - not least because of the mix of different genres mentioned, they are one of the most influential punk bands in the United States of America.
history
The band was founded by their then 17-year-old front man and lead singer Mike Ness in Fullerton , Orange County / California and is therefore one of the American punk rock bands of the "second generation". Strongly influenced by rock 'n' roll , rockabilly , blues and country , they quickly found their own distinctive style.
According to Brett Gurewitz , Bad Religion's first appearance in a warehouse in Pomona was at least one of Social Distortion's first.
Furthermore, they initially played with other Orange County bands, e.g. B. Adolescents , Agent Orange , X and Black Flag on the California coast and quickly became popular. After a concert by Social Distortion, Dexter Holland and Greg Kriesel had the idea of forming a band together; from this emerged The Offspring .
In 1982, together with the band Youth Brigade , they started their first tour through the USA and Canada , which was captured on film, which also took them to the home of minor threat singer Ian MacKaye in New York . The result is the documentary Another State of Mind , which is considered one of the best about the early punk rock movement in America.
Her first regular album Mommy's little Monster from 1983 is considered a fundamental milestone in the history of the American punk rock movement.
Social Distortion continued to play concerts until 1985, when Mike Ness finally underwent a drug rehab program after a series of brief hospital and prison stays . So it was very quiet around the band for a while.
In 1988 the band returned with the heavily influenced by country music album Prison Bound . The albums Social Distortion (1990) and Somewhere between Heaven and Hell (1992) followed.
The band reached their peak in 1996 with the album White Light, White Heat, White Trash and the single I was wrong . Both had high placements in the American independent charts. In 1998, Live at the Roxy was an impressive live album.
In the spring of 2000, longtime guitarist Dennis Danell died unexpectedly of a stroke at the age of 38. In September 2004, the band released their first studio album in eight years entitled Sex, Love and Rock 'n' Roll, as well as the live DVD Live in Orange County .
Brent Liles, who was bassist with Social Distortion until 1984 and later with Agent Orange, was hit by a truck on January 18, 2007 while riding his bike through Placentia, California, and died at the scene of the accident.
In April 2009, drummer Charlie Quintana left the band after almost ten years. Since May 2009 Adam "Atom" Willard belonged to the band. In June 2009 Social Distortion were on tour in Europe, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland. As of December 2009, Social Distortion were in the studio to release a new album in the last quarter of 2010. During the recording of the new album, Adam Willard left the band in March 2010, according to them due to foreseeable differences with his band Angels and Airwaves .
In January 2011, the seventh studio album Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes was released .
