Matthew "McCall" Freeman (* 1966 in Albany , California ) is the bass player for the punk band Rancid .

He grew up in the Berkeley suburbs , where he met Tim Armstrong , with whom he founded Operation Ivy in 1987 . After their breakup in 1989 he played in Downfall , a project identical to Operation Ivy, and in the political hardcore band MDC and founded Rancid in 1991 with Tim Armstrong . In 2004 he worked for a short time at Social Distortion .

Freeman plays punk rock , ska , reggae as well as occasional funk and rockabilly . Freeman's trademark is his virtuoso bass playing, which is very unusual for punk rock, enriched with walking bass lines and fast filigree bass solos (for example in the rancid song Maxwell Murder ).

In addition to Rancid, Matt Freeman also plays in various side projects, e.g. B. The Transplants and the band Devil's Brigade , where the bassist is the lead singer.
