Harambee

In Swahili, Harambee means something like: "Let's all pull together!".

It was Kenya's first president, Jomo Kenyatta , who launched a self-help movement that is still important today under this motto. In his speeches he repeatedly called for cooperation with his typical “Haaa-ramm-beiij”.

If z. If, for example, the press calls for a Harambee - always with an attractive " Guest of Honor " - then money is publicly collected for a specific project such as a school, study abroad or a church building. After standing in line for a long time, the cash is donated in large baskets, and the amount of the individual donor amounts is called out loudly. There are also little games with which wealthy citizens are encouraged to donate more. So z. B. Put a boy and a girl in front of the meeting, and you can donate on both heads. Two parties who like to see “their” child ahead of the game and who push donations higher and higher quickly get caught. To the delight of the one camp that welcomes every new donation from its benefactor with loud cheers. The guest of honor always has to donate the most. He collects most of the money beforehand from wealthy friends or companies and also reaches into the private box himself. To be a guest of honor is both a duty and an honor. In the case of large harambees, the sums with the names of the donors are published in the newspaper the next day. This definitely serves to cultivate the image of the donors.

A number of aid organizations for Kenya have also given themselves the name Harambee internationally. B. in Germany and Austria.
