The Adolescents are an 1980 founded American Melodic Hardcore - band from California .

Band history

The Adolescents were founded in Fullerton in 1980 and come from the same scene as Bad Religion , the Circle Jerks and TSOL, among others . The first line-up included bassist Steve Soto, who had previously been active with Agent Orange , singer Tony Cadena, guitarists Frank Agnew (previously with Social Distortion ) and John O'Donovan, and drummer "Peter Pan". After O'Donovan and Pan left the band, the rest of the formation played together with Agnew's brother Rikk (guitar) and Casey Royer (drums) the self-titled debut album, released in 1981. This was produced by Thom Wilson , who later also worked for bands like TSOL, DOA and The Offspring .

Although the album was successful, it also caused tension among the band members. Constant changes have been made throughout the history of adolescents. First Rikk Agnew left the group and was replaced first by Pat Smear of the Germs and shortly thereafter by Steve Roberts. Shortly before the start of a planned US tour, the adolescents broke up for the first time after the release of Welcome to Reality .

In 1986 the Adolescents formed anew with Tony Cadena, Rikk Agnew and Steve Soto and recorded the album Brats In Battalions with Sandy Hansen and Alfie Agnew (the younger brother of Frank and Rikk) . After the departure of Cadena they played the album Balboa Fun Zone in 1988 , took Frank Agnew back into the band and toured the United States for three years until the band split up again.

2001 there was a new reunion of the band in the line-up of the first album. Rikk Agnew and Casey Royer have since dropped out and have been replaced by Derek O'Brien and Frank Agnew's son Frank Jr. In 2005 the band celebrated their 25th birthday with a series of concerts and releases. After Frank Agnew Jr. resumed his school career after a tour in 2005/2006, Matt Beld ( Los Infernos , Cadillac Tramps ) stood up for him. In 2007 they started recording a new album. In 2008 they went on an extensive European tour. In early 2010 they won the OC Music Award in the Best Punk Band category. In mid-2010, the album The Fastest Kid Alive was finally released. In 2012 the EP American Dogs in Europe followed and in 2013 the next full album Presumed Insolent , all on the German label Concrete Jungle.

Steve Soto passed away on June 27, 2018 at the age of 54. Brad Logan became the new bass player (formerly with Leftöver Crack ).

Rikk Agnew has also appeared as a founding member of Christian Death and through a solo album ( All by myself ). Pat Smear later played with Nirvana and the Foo Fighters .

style

With melodic hardcore and partly polyphonic singing, her first LP became a classic of the so-called West Coast hard core . According to Allmusic , the band, together with Agent Orange and Social Distortion, established the typical Orange County hardcore sound and, through their "plump energy and perfect teenage snottiness", inspired numerous imitators who would have used the attitude and song material of the adolescents.
