Audioslave was an American alternative rock band that formed in 2001 in Glendale , California . The band consisted of Chris Cornell , then former singer of the band Soundgarden , and the instrumentalists of the band Rage Against the Machine . On February 15, 2007 singer Chris Cornell left Audioslave, which led to the breakup of the group.

history

After Zack de la Rocha had turned his back on the band Rage Against the Machine and no worthy successor was in sight, the remaining members played a few songs with Chris Cornell on a trial basis. In May 2001, 21 songs were recorded with producer Rick Rubin within 19 days. At the end of March 2002, however, singer Cornell left the band project, which at that time was still called "Civilian", without giving any reasons for this decision. Only after a change of management was Cornell to be persuaded to return. Subsequently, the band was given the name "Audioslave" in September.

On November 19, 2002, the first LP Audioslave was released , which became a success with five million copies sold worldwide. A short time later the singles Cochise , Like a Stone and Show Me How to Live followed . The opinion of the trade press, however, was divided, as it was often of the opinion that the band was making too little use of its potential. Compared to Rage Against the Machine, political content took a back seat in the texts written by Cornell, even if Morello took a stand against the Iraq war and the band became the first American rock band on May 6, 2005 with the permission of the United States and Cuba on the Anti -Imperialist Plaza in Havana played a concert in front of tens of thousands of fans (see below).

In May 2005 the second album Out of Exile was released . It entered the US charts at number 1 and reached numerous top ten placements in other countries. The first single was Be Yourself . This single was then chosen as the title track for the ARD Sportschau . At the same time, Audioslave toured Europe for the first time. In September 2006 the third album Revelations was released .

The first rumors of a separation surfaced shortly afterwards, because Audioslave announced that they would not go on tour with the album. Instead, the band's three instrumentalists first appeared again in January 2007 as Rage Against the Machine with Zack de la Rocha. The rumors of separation around Audioslave were finally confirmed on February 15, 2007, when Chris Cornell announced to the press that he had left Audioslave due to "insurmountable personal conflicts and musical differences". At the same time he wished the remaining three band members all the best for the future. As a reason for his departure, Cornell also cited that he wanted to concentrate on his solo career. In a 2007 interview with Metal Hammer , the three other members of Audioslave announced that the "chemistry" between them and Cornell was no longer right. They confirmed the end of the band and announced that they would continue with Rage Against the Machine. Tom Morello also gave the reason that his solo project The Nightwatchman , which he presented live in 2003, was more important to him than Audioslave.

At the end of January 2017, the band played for the first time since the breakup at the Anti-Inaugural Ball in Los Angeles with other bands. The reason was the protest against the inauguration of the 45th US President Donald Trump . Due to Chris Cornell's suicide on May 17, 2017, this was also the band's last live performance.

Important appearances

In May 2005, Audioslave appeared as the first American rock band in front of 60,000 spectators in a concert authorized by the US government in Havana (Cuba), of which a live DVD was released in November 2005 .

In addition to regular concerts, Audioslave was often at large-scale music festivals - e. B. the " Hurricane " -, " Novarock " - or the " Rock-am-Ring " festival - to see. The " Live-8 " Festival, which was held in 2005 for the benefit of poor and hungry people, played a special role .

At many of their concerts, Audioslave fell back on the different roots of their members - the concert-goers often heard well-known songs from Soundgarden (e.g. Black Hole Sun ) and Rage Against the Machine (e.g. Killing in the Name ) presents.

style

The band, like their two predecessor groups, attached great importance to producing all sounds without a synthesizer . Audioslave tried to create an antithesis to the nu-metal bands that they thought were hyped and had great success around 2000. Audioslave produced both energetic guitar sounds and calmer sound spectra. A combination of these components can be found in many of their songs. Hard refrains are thus in direct connection with calm verses, whereby Audioslave developed their individual style, which combined the riff-heavy crossover from Rage Against the Machine and sometimes also Soundgarden with quieter songs and sometimes introverted lyrics by Cornell.
