His career began in restaurants where he performed in front of small groups of spectators. He later went on tour with Billy Bragg and became a celebrity especially in Latin America.

On May 7th, 2007 his first album One Man Revolution was released from which the first single "The Road I Must Travel" was derived. According to Epic Records , approximately 25,000 albums have been sold. On September 26, 2008, the second album The Fabled City was released . In contrast to the first album, there are now guest singers on it, Shooter Jennings (lyrics from the song: "The Iron Wheel") and Serj Tankian (lyrics from the song: "Lazarus on Down").

In July 2011 the new EP Union Town was released as an import .

In September 2011 a new album was released entitled World Wide Rebel Songs . In the song "Save the Hammer for the Man" Ben Harper appears as a guest singer. In 2012 the World Wide Rebel Tour website went online with an approximately 30-minute documentary film.

In 2015 he announced in an interview that he was working on a new The Nightwatchman album.

Tom is a member of the Industrial Workers of the World , whose logo he wears on solo appearances.
