Eddie Money, 2013

Eddie Money , actually Edward Joseph Mahoney , (born March 21, 1949 in New York City , New York - † September 13, 2019 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American rock singer . Between 1978 and 1992 he had 23 hits in the singles charts in his home country, including the two top ten hits Take Me Home Tonight (1986) and Walk on Water (1988).

Life

In the early 1970s, Edward Mahoney attended the New York Police Academy to become a police officer like his father. However, he soon discovered his talent as a singer and signed a recording deal with CBS Records in 1976 .

He moved to Berkeley, California. His debut album Eddie Money included a. a. the piece Two Tickets To Paradise , with which he reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The following year, he made it to number eleven with Baby Hold On on the US hit parade. However, his best-known song did not appear until almost a decade later: in 1986 his piece Take Me Home Tonight , which he recorded with Ronnie Spector ( The Ronettes ), reached fourth place on the Billboard charts. For this recording he also received his only Grammy nomination for "best rock singer".

His last hit was Peace in our time from 1989. The albums from 1991 and 1992 were more or less ignored by the general public and Columbia therefore canceled his contract. Even so, he released the album Ready Eddie in 1999 .

In 2007 he paid homage to the rock of the 1960s with the album Wanna go back , when he toured the country under his real name Eddie Mahoney with his band The Grapes of Wrath as a 15-year-old .

With this nostalgic program he toured the States with the Eddie Money Band in 2007. He sang his old hit Take me home tonight several times with his daughter Jessica.

In the episode Reich for one day of the sitcom King of Queens he played himself in a guest role. He sang his songs Shakin and Save a little Room in your Heart for me live. The song Two Tickets To Paradise can also be heard a few times in this context and follows on from the story of the episode.

He had another guest appearance in 2018 in an episode of the Netflix series The Kominsky Method , in which he played himself.

On August 24, 2019, Money, a long-term smoker, announced that he had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He died of the disease in September 2019, leaving behind a wife and five children.
