A Perfect Circle is an American progressive rock - band , which was founded in the 1999th

history

The result is A Perfect Circle in Los Angeles as a side project of Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan and former guitar tech tool of the band, Billy Howerdel. The idea was born back in 1996 when the recordings for the tool album Ænima were finished, but the studio time was not yet exhausted. Without further ado, Howerdel played a few of his own compositions, whereupon Maynard proposed a project band. The ensemble was completed first by the versatile instrumentalist Paz Lenchantin , then by Tim Alexander , the drummer of the band Primus , and finally by the guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen , who had previously opened Failure Tool concerts with his band. However, the band's line-up changed frequently in the first few years of the band's history, so that every album released so far was recorded with a different line-up . Paz Lenchantin left the band after the release of the debut to devote himself to Zwan , a project around Billy Corgan , the front man of the band The Smashing Pumpkins , and finally to participate again on a third album, which has not been released to this day . In addition, the ex- Nine-Inch-Nails musician Danny Lohner joined the band as a full member while working on the third album, after he was intended to be a member earlier, but had only been able to rehearse sporadically and briefly in the early summer of 2003 before James Iha's entry had helped out.

A Perfect Circle first performed live in Los Angeles in August 1999 . Further concerts with positive feedback until autumn made the musicians confident that they would try an album. Immediately one began with the recordings for the debut album Mer de Noms , which should appear in the following year. The title is French and literally means “sea of names” in German. Howerdel: "The flow of the songs on our album reminds me of the way in which the words merge into one another in French [...]." From the point of view of the contraction of words, the reading "merde noms" ("Scheiß- Names ”) possible, but there is no proof of the intention. At # 4, the album became the highest-debut rock band debut album of all time on the Billboard 200 . It was officially approved for sale in China, making it the first album after four years of complete rejection of western rock productions.

In 2003, Thirteenth Step was followed by a second studio album, which was very successful, especially in North America, and received critical acclaim. In 2004, when Keenan was focused on working on the next Tool album, the group took a hiatus that lasted 13 years. In 2013, however, a greatest hits album was released, which also contained a new song called By and Down .

On October 17, 2017, the new song The Doomed was released, which indicated a new album. Another new song was released with Disillusioned on January 1, 2018. With TalkTalk , a third song was finally released in early February and it was announced that the new album would be called Eat the Elephant . It was released on April 20, 2018.

style

music

A stylistic classification of A Perfect Circle is difficult , especially due to the massive change of style between the albums Thirteenth Step and eMOTIVe . However, it must be taken into account that eMOTIVe consists almost entirely of cover versions . While on the two previous albums the band orientated themselves on the progressive rock style of Keenan's main project Tool , the influences of the anti-war movement of the 1960s and 1970s can be seen on eMOTIVe . The album eMOTIVe was released on the occasion of the US presidential election in 2004. The anti- Bush attitude is particularly evident in the accompanying video clips . But Mer de Noms and Thirteenth Step also differed noticeably from Tool in certain respects. With less complex rhythms, a shorter playing time of the songs and an overall concept geared more towards song than guitars and rhythm, the works of A Perfect Circle are more accessible to a wide audience than the often rhythmically quite complex songs by Tool.

The name Art Rock was chosen by the artist agency that represents A Perfect Circle (with the addition of Nu Metal and Gothic ), the Metal Hammer and, in the case of eMOTIVe, the Eclipsed (with the attribute "Political"). Regarding Thirteenth Step chose another Eclipsed the term -Rezensent alternative , as well as the Internet platform laut.de . The longer article has three categorizations in the same Eclipsed edition, starting with Rock / Pop for Mer de Noms , ending with Progressive Rock for Thirteenth Step and headed in the info box with Alternative Rock. Rolling Stone, who misses the "perfect concept", thinks he can hear ambient ambient at times during the debut .

Texts

Maynard James Keenan are said to have “cryptic, hardly interpretable texts”. He was happy to provide information that his texts mainly revolve around accusations, forgiveness and healing, often with a personal background. If he is dismissive, he explains that the lyrics are the result of the musical mold supplied by Howerdel, and that he hates the analytical crumbling of his product. “You should hear the whole thing”, he demands, “don't take me so seriously”.

Song info

In addition to the many cover versions with Passive, eMOTIVe contains a piece that was originally written for the never published Tapeworm project around Trent Reznor and Maynard James Keenan (and was then called Vacant ).

The song Counting Bodies like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums found its place in the soundtrack for the computer game Rage from 2011. The song Passive was used in the soundtrack for the mystery film Constantine , and a remix by The Outsider was used as the end credits in Resident Evil: Afterlife used.

From the straightforward title repertoire that was best-of CD with the allusive to the number of degrees of a circle Title Three Sixty compiled and published in November, 2013.
