Mer de Noms is the debut album by the progressive rock band A Perfect Circle . In German the means from the French coming titles sea of names . The album was released in Germany on May 19, 2000.

The music on Mer de Noms has been compared to a mixture of Devin Townsend , filter and tool . The mostly melancholic and atmospheric, only partly heavier and metal-like pieces come from Billy Howerdel ( Nine Inch Nails ). Then there are the string arrangements by bassist Paz Lenchantin . Howerdel named the music of Lloyd Cole and The Commotions or The Smiths as personal musical influences .

Regarding the French name of the album, Howerdel said that the sound of the language reminded him of how the songs merge on the album. In addition, it is a feminine language and the music also has a “feminine quality”. The songs Judith , 3 Libras and The Hollow were released as singles . For Judith turned David Fincher a music video . For the album, the opening act for Nine Inch Nails was toured.

The magazine Visions sat Mer de Noms in their list of "150 Albums for eternity" in 2005 at No. 71. Michael Rensen from Rock Hard compared the album with a nightly "beach walk on the edge of a vibrant cyberspace - metropolis " and raised his "darkly charismatic ”singing by Maynard James Keenan as well as the“ songwriting level ”overall. The rating was 8.5 out of ten points. Allmusic's Ned Raggett placed the specific skills of the actors involved in the focus of his review, but especially the combination of Keenan's voice and Howerdel's songwriting and production. This is how one of the best “modern rock” albums of 2000 came into being. Four out of five stars and the “AMG Album Pick” award were given here.
