Thirteenth Step is the second studio album by the American progressive rock band A Perfect Circle .

The album was released on September 16, 2003, three years after the release of the first studio album, Mer de Noms . The songs Weak and Powerless , The Outsider and Blue were released as singles .

background

It is believed that the album's title is a nod to the Twelve Step Program , an alcoholics Anonymous abstinence support program . Maynard James Keenan says on a comment for the aMOTION DVD that Thirteenth Step is a concept album in which all tracks deal with the problem of addiction. The follow-up album eMOTIVe from 2004 is also a concept album; in this case the work deals with the anti-war movement.

By the time it was released, Troy Van Leeuwen and Paz Lenchantin had left the band. Bassist Jeordie White , previously known by Marilyn Manson as Twiggy Ramirez , and guitarist James Iha , who had previously played with the Smashing Pumpkins , replaced Van Leeuwen and Lenchantin. Iha did not participate in the creation of Thirteenth Step , however.

The album was voted 26th of the "150 records for eternity" by the readers of the music magazine Visions .
