Rage ( Engl. , Rage) is a computer game by id Software and was on October 7, 2011 for Microsoft Windows , macOS , Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 releases. The game can primarily be assigned to the genre first-person shooter , but also contains racing game elements, for example . The game is the first to be based on the new id Tech 5 graphics engine . The game was released uncut in Germany.

development

Rage was unveiled by id Software on August 3, 2007 at QuakeCon . The lead programmer John Carmack announced that the id Tech 5 will replace the id Tech 4 introduced in 2004 with Doom 3 and will support new components such as MegaTexture . In July 2008 it was announced that Electronic Arts would be the publisher of Rage . After the previously independent studio id Software was taken over by ZeniMax Media and its subsidiary Bethesda Softworks in June 2009 , Electronic Arts gave up the distribution rights in December 2009. On November 18, 2010, Bethesda Softworks released the mobile game Rage HD for iOS in the App Store . In October 2011, Rage was released for Windows, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, followed by a version for macOS in February 2012.

action

An asteroid threatens to fall to earth in the future and destroy all life on it. The governments of the world are faced with the task of ensuring the survival of humanity. Since the asteroid cannot be stopped, so-called "arks" are developed. These are created deep under the earth's surface and offer protection for a select group of people.

106 years after the asteroid devastated the earth, the player wakes up from his cryosleep and leaves it as the only survivor of his ark. When the survivor reaches the surface, he is attacked by two members of the Ghost clan. Dan Hagar ( spoken in the English version by John Goodman ), a wasteland settler, rescues him and takes him to his settlement. Dan informs the survivors that the “Authority”, a kind of new government, is after Ark residents for reasons unknown. First, the survivor does simple jobs for Dan and his settlement. However, since his presence is too dangerous for the settlement, the survivor leaves Dan's settlement and goes to the nearby town of Wellspring.

During his stay there he helps the residents of the city with various problems, e.g. B. in the defense against bandits and mutants. Eventually he comes into contact with Kvasir, an older scientist who used to work for the government. Kvasir tells the survivor about the inhumane experiments of the authorities and the creation of the mutants, and brings the survivor into contact with the resistance, an anti-authority group. After rescuing the resistance leader, Captain Marshall, the survivor attracts government attention and is forced to flee Wellspring. He finds refuge at the headquarters of the resistance, Subway Town. As he did at Wellspring, he earns trust and respect from the locals by doing jobs for them. The survivor learns what happened in the last century from the leader of the resistance, Captain Marshall, who is himself an ark survivor. Shortly before the asteroid Apophis hit Earth, one of the generals in charge of the Ark program sabotaged all of the arks, except the arks that contained the people who were loyal to him. The rest should be hibernated forever. The people from the unsabotaged arks form the government today.

With the government rapidly expanding its sphere of influence around Wellspring, the resistance is forced to act. With the help of the ark survivor, he is able to find out the locations of all arks on earth. Marshall plans to use this data to reactivate the arks and form an army to destroy the government. The only way to do this is to broadcast Capital Prime's data at the government headquarters. The survivor fights his way alone and manages to transfer the activation codes. The game ends by activating all of the arks on the surface.

Game concept

While id Software developed pure first-person shooters with the previous computer game series Doom and Quake and decisively shaped this genre in the 1990s, the developer studio wanted to break new ground with Rage, both in terms of the game concept and the game world. Rage can essentially also be assigned to the first-person shooter genre, but also contains elements of combat vehicles, racing games and simple role-playing games .

In contrast to the linear level design often found in newer first-person shooters, Rage has a more open game design. The course of the game is not strictly linear due to side missions that can optionally be followed alongside the main missions. However, it is not a real open world game and it was not planned as such by the developers. Interactions between the player character and non-player characters are also part of the course of the game. As usual in role-playing games, the player can accept orders from different people for a certain reward and search the area for loot . In the foreground is the fight in the first person view against different types of opponents with a large number of different weapons in rather linear game sections.

Multiplayer

Rage has two multiplayer modes: Road Rage and Legends of the Wasteland . In Road Rage , up to four players compete in a free-for-all match. These matches are held in arenas with vehicles. The aim is to collect as many points as possible by destroying an enemy vehicle and stealing its points. Legends of the Wasteland features a series of two-player co-op missions based on the story of the single-player campaign. There are a total of nine different missions in this game mode.

technology

Using the id Tech 5, it is possible to achieve a large variety of textures with large external areas, a more realistic shadow model and fluid movements of the sprites and models. However, there are problems with the implementation for the Playstation 3 in terms of the smooth reloading of textures.

successor

On May 14, 2019, Bethesda Softworks released the successor Rage 2 for Microsoft Windows , Xbox One and PlayStation 4 . The sequel starts 30 years after the storyline of Rage . The first person shooter was created by the Swedish developer Avalanche Studios , id Software supported the development. For Rage 2 , Avalanche's in-house Apex Engine was used instead of id Tech . The reception of Rage 2 was mixed.
