id Tech is an influential family of computer game engines from the eponymous manufacturer id Software .

A large number (more than 50) of games and derived engines are based on the engines of the series, most notably the games of the Doom and Quake series. The important GoldSrc engine (also known as the "half-life engine") is also based on code from the id Tech series. The first four generations of the software were released by the manufacturer - after each commercial phase - as free software under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

history

1st generation

The predecessor of the first generation, internally designated as id Tech 1 , was the Wolfenstein 3D engine , which was also manufactured by id Software, but was not yet called id Tech .

It became known to the public as the Doom engine . The first release of a game based on an engine in the series was that of Doom in 1993. The first generation did not yet offer a fully-fledged three-dimensional rendered environment. H. there were no or only limited movements of the viewing direction on the y-axis.

2nd generation

The second generation id Tech 2 was originally called "Quake Engine" with its successor " Quake II Engine ." It was originally written for the 1996 Quake. It offers true 3D real-time rendering and is the first id Tech engine to use the client-server model.

The Quake engine was updated with a new executable, called QuakeWorld, that contained code to improve Quake's networking capabilities in response to the demand for cross-internet network games that arose from Quake's use of UDP for networks.

It was later updated again for the 1997 release of Quake II, with improvements like colored lighting and a new MD2 model format.

3rd generation

The third generation of id Tech 3 became known as the Quake III Arena engine.

4th generation

The fourth generation id Tech 4 was released as a Doom 3 engine.

5th generation

Rage was the first title based on id tech 5 . The engine supports mega textures .

6th generation

Based on id tech 6 , Doom from 2016 and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus were released .

7th generation

The current generation is id tech 7 . Doom Eternal should run on this version of the engine.
