Id Tech 5 is the fifth version of the id Tech game engine from id Software and was first used by Rage (2011). The successor will be the id Tech 6 from 2015 .

history

The engine is the successor to id Tech 4, also known as the " Doom 3 Engine", and is used for the first time in the id software game Rage . It was also mentioned that the engine should be used for another title in the Quake series.

The id Tech 5 was presented in 2007 at Quakecon by technical director John D. Carmack . In contrast to the older generation, this time fundamental emphasis was placed on cross-platform development. In addition, the engine will use an extended version of the MegaTexture and be able to generate extended shadow details.

At QuakeCon 2010, id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead said that id Tech 5 would be licensed to other game developers, but only if those games were also released through Bethesda Softworks .

Games

technology

The main focus was on a fluid and detailed representation of extensive areas of the game world of Rage . For this purpose, an extended version of the MegaTexture technology developed by John D. Carmack for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is used, which id Software calls Virtual Texturing in the new version . This was not only designed for large outdoor areas, but also enables the use of virtual textures on models and sprites. This enables a more dynamic game world to be created in which no two trees are the same.

The multi-platform design has the advantage that not much time has to be spent on porting, so that you can concentrate more on fine-tuning.

One of the great visual innovations is the ability of the renderer to display penumbra in shadow with the help of shadow maps . In contrast, id Tech 4 uses a shadow technology that shows very sharp shadows. In addition, id Tech 5 offers different lighting technologies such as HDRR Centric, Bloom and Crepuscular rays (volumetric lighting).

Other effects are:

The engine will also provide multithreaded support on the CPU for various tasks, including: a. Rendering, Game Logic, AI, Physics and Sound Processing.

John Carmack mentioned in his keynote address at Quakecon 2007 that id Tech 5 is based on OpenGL and Direct3D 9c.

The engine still comes with a new content creation tool package called id Studio , which is said to be much more user-friendly than previous versions. Earlier versions of these tools forced developers to perform many command line operations, while id Tech 5 wanted all of these functions to be possible while the engine was running .

disadvantage

In particular due to the applied texture technology, the virtual texturing , the levels in their raw form require an enormous memory requirement ( gigabyte range) and a high computer performance. Modders and amateur level designers are thus much stronger than previously dependent on the tools of id Software. Id Software will provide the id Studio tools for editing in real time.
