Wolfenstein: The New Order is a computer game and the official successor to Wolfenstein . The first person shooter was developed by the Swedish developer studio MachineGames , a subsidiary of the US game manufacturer ZeniMax Media , and published on May 20, 2014 via its publishing subsidiary Bethesda Softworks .
action
Unlike its predecessors Wolfenstein 3D (1992), Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001) and Wolfenstein (2009), Wolfenstein: The New Order is no longer set in the Second World War , but continues the story of the protagonist BJ Blazkowicz in 1960. The US soldier was in a coma for 14 years and woke up in a world ruled by the National Socialists , referred to in the German version as simply "the regime". He joins the resistance and takes up the fight against the dictatorship. The New Order thematizes an alternative world story that is comparable to the novels Fatherland by Robert Harris and The Oracle of the Mountains by Philip K. Dick .
development
The game was announced on May 7, 2013. The first trailer appeared on the same day. The English-language website GameSpot and the German magazine GameStar previously visited the Swedish developer MachineGames to report exclusively on Wolfenstein: The New Order . The id Tech 5 game engine is used for the graphics . Wolfenstein: The New Order is the first part of the series in which id Software ( Wolfenstein 3D ) is not actively involved in the development. In addition to the Windows version, the game was also developed for the PlayStation 3 , Xbox 360 , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One game consoles . Originally announced for the end of 2013, The New Order was released on May 20, 2014 after a postponement.
Sales versions
As with its predecessors, the German-language version has been changed in comparison to the international version and clear references to National Socialism, e.g. the marks of unconstitutional organizations and the party name, which are punishable in Germany according to § 86a StGb , have been removed from the game. According to publisher Bethesda , the depictions of violence did not have to be defused for the German version, which was released by the USK from the age of 18. The uncut international version cannot be activated or started from Internet access from Germany on the online platform Steam, which is required to run the game . This restriction, which originally also applied to Austria, Switzerland, Israel and Japan, was lifted for these countries by Bethesda on May 25, 2014. On November 22, 2019, the uncut international version was also released in Germany.

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
In March 2015, Bethesda Softworks announced Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, a stand-alone expansion for The New Order . The prequel is as settled the previous series offshoot in World War II, playing on Castle Wolfenstein . It includes two missions and offers new weapons and enemy types. The Old Blood was released on May 5, 2015 as a downloadable title for Windows , Xbox One and PlayStation 4 . In German-speaking countries, the game will also be available as a shop version for these three platforms from May 15, 2015 .
