It's a spin-off of the Wolfenstein series that takes place in an alternate world scenario in which the Nazis won World War II . action

Twenty years after Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus , the United States and much of the world are freed from Nazi control , and BJ Blazkowicz and his wife Anya can raise their twin daughters, Jessie and Zofia, and teach them how to defend themselves.

In 1980 Blazkowicz mysteriously disappears without a trace. Jessie, Zofia and their friend Abby, Grace Walker's daughter, discover a hidden room in the attic with a card that says Blazkowicz traveled to Nazi-occupied New Paris to meet the French resistance. Believing the American authorities will not follow Blazkowicz to Nazi France, the girls steal an FBI helicopter and a pair of motorized armor and fly to France.

In France, the girls meet Juju, the resistance leader, who confirms that she met Blazkowicz. However, she doesn't know where he is right now and the two twins are looking for further clues. They discover that Blazkowicz is trying to find a way into a secret Nazi hideout called Lab X. In order to gain access to Lab X, the girls decide to help the resistance and start a hacking mission.

When Abby checks the data on the computers, she discovers that Juju is a Nazi agent and that her partner is General Lothar, the commander of the Nazi forces in New Paris. The girls pretend to drink Juju's poisoned wine and Lothar tells of his plans to build a fourth kingdom. When the girls wake up, a fight ensues in which Lothar and Juju escape while Abby is stabbed in her left eye. Abby helps find Jessie and Zofia Lab X. She also explains that the Nazi leadership tried to kill Lothar because he did not obey her orders.

Jessie and Zofia get into Lab X and get to the deepest level where they find Blazkowicz alive and well. He confesses to them that after killing Hitler in the 1960s, he accidentally activated a doomsday device that will eventually make the earth uninhabitable. So he traveled to Lab X to find a way to stop the doomsday device. There he learned of the existence of several parallel universes and saw one in which the Nazis had lost World War II. He then uses a Da'at Yichud artifact to upgrade Jessie's and Zofia's powered armor suits and instructs them to follow Lothar.

In the meantime, Lothar recaptured his old headquarters and ordered his allies in Berlin to carry out a coup against the current government. Jessie and Zofia then confront Juju and Lothar and kill them both. Then Anya and Grace arrive. When Blazkowicz, Anya and Grace realize the threat posed by the Fourth Reich, they decide to call on all of their allies around the world to fight against the Fourth Reich. Jessie, Zofia and Abby decide to stay in Paris to defend themselves against the inevitable counterattack of the Fourth Reich.

    Gameplay

In the game, the player takes control of Jessie or Zofia Blazkowicz from the first person perspective . An optional cooperative multiplayer mode is included in the game in addition to the single player mode . The players can play the campaign with another player. Missions can be completed in a non-linear order, and players can unlock new equipment and skills as the game progresses.

    Development and publication

Bethesda first announced the game at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018. The game was developed by the developer studio MachineGames , which led the development of the newly started Wolfenstein series, and by Arkane Studios in Lyon , which previously supervised the development of the Dishonored series. The Deluxe Edition of the game includes a Buddy Pass that can be given to a player who does not own the game but can still play in the same game session as the owner of the Deluxe Edition.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood was released on July 25, 2019 for Microsoft Windows (via the Steam and Bethesda Store sales platforms ). The console versions for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were released a day later. A short time later in Germany, the international version appeared in which swastikas and other unconstitutional symbols can be displayed due to artistic freedom . This is the first game in the Wolfenstein series in which these symbols do not have to be made illegible. The development of the switch version was outsourced to Panic Button . Although the Switch version has a Standard and a Deluxe Edition, the game cannot be purchased on physical media and is instead offered as a download code that can be redeemed in Nintendo eShop . With the release of the cloud gaming platform Google Stadia on November 19, 2019, Wolfenstein: Youngblood also appeared for this platform.

Above all, the continuation of the predecessor, the music and the voice acting , the level design and the challenging and action-packed combat encounters and gunplay with light role-playing elements were praised. On the other hand, performance problems, neglect of the plot and repetitive side tasks that stretch the game and offer little innovation were criticized. The GameStar describes the game as the weakest part of the series.
