Quake is a computer game series by id Software that belongs to the genre of first-person shooters .

overview

The Quake series, which began in 1996, is one of the most influential representatives of the first- person shooter genre and established many standards in relation to 3D technology , control schemes, modifiability and the multiplayer mode. The commonalities of the individual Quake parts can be found in the game design, not necessarily in the plot. The futuristic background story in Quake II has nothing in common with that of the first part, and the third part is designed as a pure multiplayer title without a supporting plot. The fourth part ( Quake 4 ), however, ties in with the story of the second part.

Games

Quake

Quake was released for PC on May 31, 1996 . The game, or its engine of the same name, became the model for many subsequent 3D games, in particular the unrestricted three-dimensional level architecture for the first time and the use of 3D models instead of sprites were revolutionary at the time. The good (and consciously encouraged) modifiability resulted in numerous new game modes, especially in the multiplayer area, which were later adopted by many other games. The game was later ported to multiple consoles.

Quake II

Quake II was released on November 30, 1997 . A whole new storyline was started for the game, which tells a futuristic war story (which was later continued in the sequel Quake 4 ). For the multiplayer component, additional deathmatch maps and a very successful official capture the flag mode were made available on the Internet . The game was later implemented for the PlayStation and Nintendo 64 in addition to the PC version .

Quake III arena

On December 2, 1999 , the third part, Quake III Arena , was released. As with the Unreal Tournament , which appeared almost at the same time, it is a pure multiplayer game; there is no classic single-player campaign. With many improvements to the engine, the game was able to dominate the genre in addition to Counter-Strike , at least in the multiplayer area. The game was ported to the Dreamcast and the PlayStation 2 .

Quake 4

Quake 4 was developed as the first title in the series not by id Software itself, but under his direction by Raven Software and published on October 18, 2005 for the PC. On November 18 was followed by the Xbox 360 version. In addition, for the first time the game is not based on an engine specially developed for Quake, but on the engine of Doom 3 , which is considered an indirect further development of the Quake engine. Like the first two parts of the series, Quake 4 offers both a single-player campaign, which is the sequel to Quake II , as well as a multiplayer mode that is playfully designed as a direct successor to Quake III Arena . Quake 4 is so far the only part of the series for which a German, censored USK-16 version came on the market that was not indexed .

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

The offshoot Enemy Territory: Quake Wars , published in 2007, is a spiritual successor to Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory , but takes place in the same fictional universe as Quake II and Quake 4 . Settled before Quake II in terms of time, the goal of the multiplayer-heavy title is to prevent or lead an alien invasion of the Strogg against humanity. In addition, the player can fight on both sides in a single player campaign and - similar to Battlefield 2 or Team Fortress 2 - fall back on a class system including unlockable extras.

Quake Live

Quake Live was released in 2010. It is a version of Quake III Arena that has been updated with new content and is available from the Steam internet distribution platform .

Quake Champions

Quake Champions has been in development since 2016. When the title was announced at the E3 2016 game fair , developer id Software and publisher Bethesda showed the first game scenes. The game was released worldwide as an early access version on the computer game platform Steam in August 2018 . As a multiplayer title, Quake Champions follows on from the Quake III Arena, which was released in 1999, and offers like this among others the game modes Deathmatch, Duel, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. While Quake III already had a large number of selectable characters , which, however, only differed visually, the main innovation of Quake Champions is the introduction of different player classes. These champions differ from one another in size, speed, and armor values. In addition, there are individual passive skills that are permanently active, as well as active skills that can be used for a limited time. The game environments are based on the alien dimensions from Quake (1996), the champions are a colorful mixture of new characters as well as game figures from previous id software titles, such as Quake III Arena, Quake II, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and Wolfenstein. Quake Champions has been a free-to-play title since August 2018 , for which additional content can be purchased. The developer regularly publishes new content that is integrated into the game via an automatic update.

Quake engine

The Quake engine is a 3D game engine originally developed for the title of the same name and, in addition to the Unreal Engine, served as a platform for a variety of other games, but especially for first-person shooters such as Call of Duty .

QuakeC

QuakeC is a scripting language developed for Quake to simplify modifications and programming work.
