Quake Live is originally an ad-supported first-person shooter from id Software . It is based on the Quake III Arena game released in 1999 and was released in August 2010, with a public beta version being playable since February 2009.

development

At QuakeCon 2007, John Carmack announced the release of the multiplayer shooter Quake III Arena as an ad-supported browser game called Quake Zero .

As part of the Game Developers Conference , the advertising marketer IGA Worldwide issued a press release on February 19, 2008 that it could advertise in the game, now called Quake Live .

From the summer of 2008, early beta versions were tested in a closed group, and Quake Live has been generally available since February 25, 2009 , albeit still marked as a beta version. In 2009, John Carmack announced at the Quakecon 2009 computer game event that the game would also be expanded to include a payment mode. This is due to the fact that the costs cannot be covered by advertising income alone.

The beta phase ended on August 6, 2010 and two payment models were presented.

The basic game mechanics and rules of Quake Live are based on Quake III Arena and are supplemented by elements from the add-on Quake III: Team Arena (released in 2000). In addition, some elements originally developed by players have also been integrated, such as the Clan Arena game mode , which is based on the Mod Rocket Arena 3 , the duel map Blood Run (ztntourney1) , which is popular in the Quake3 community, or the CTF map Courtyard Conundrum (qzctf10 ). Overall, the game contains almost all maps from Quake III Arena (some with changes), a large part of the maps from Team Arena and all weapons from both games. There are also a number of maps that have been developed exclusively for Quake Live (qzca1-3, qczctf8). Further changes and additions are made continuously by the manufacturer.

Differences to Quake III Arena

  • Quake Live has a so-called tier ranking (eng. Tier = "rank", "level"): Players are classified on the basis of their skills, from novice to professional, in order to compensate for excessive differences in skills (capture the flag, clan arena , Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, Freeze Tag: Tier 1-4; Duel: 1-6). For example, a tier 4 player in the Clan Arena game mode is unable to join a server two levels below his or her skill level that hosts tier 2 players on average.
  • Quake Live was free from 2010-2015. The transfer to the Steamworks gaming platform took place in October 2015 , since then a paid subscription has been required.
  • Since August 2010, Quake Live has offered "Premium" and "Pro" accounts that can be purchased, which allow a partially ad-free game interface as well as various additional functions. For example, with a pro account it is possible to create your own server and thus receive your own (private) games with the respective desired settings. New maps (so-called “maps”), which the manufacturer id regularly adds, are initially reserved for premium and pro users.
  • Quake Live can only be played over the Internet.
  • A website with community functions such as friend lists including a chat system, achievements , clan systems, etc. is an integral part of Quake Live.
  • The maps taken over from Quake III Arena have been revised. This generally applies to aesthetic changes and new positions of weapons and objects. In some cases the structure of the maps was changed considerably (example: q3dm11 - Deva Station , now qzdm11 - Chemical Reaction ).
  • Depiction of violence (blood, severed body parts) has been reduced.
  • All pentagrams and other religious or occult -looking decorations have been replaced (e.g. the Jesus figure is now missing in the Grim Dungeons qzdm14 level).
  • The "runes" (permanent power-ups in team games) from Team Arena have been modified in their mode of action: the A-rune no longer regenerates ammunition ( ammo ), but armor ( armor ). The D-rune no longer amplifies shots by twice, but only by 1.5 times.
  • The strength of some weapons has been changed. The Railgun only deducts 80 life points, no longer 100.
  • The head-up display has been redesigned.
  • Quake Live includes several new maps .
  • Some of the characters that can be selected by the player have new skins (surface graphics of the character).
