The Kings of Leon are an American rock band that moves stylistically between Southern Rock and Alternative Rock . The band was founded in 2000 in Tennessee by the brothers Caleb, Jared and Nathan Followill and their cousin Matthew Followill.

The father of the three brothers, Ivan Léon Followill, was an itinerant preacher. His children were therefore initially musically active in the church orchestra. The band name is based on the grandfather's first name. Ivan Léon Followill's family settled in Nashville in 1998 , where the band was founded in 2000.
With the debut album Youth and Young Manhood , which was released in 2003, they became known mainly outside of America and toured as opening act with bands like U2 and The Strokes . According to Jared Followill, the name of this album comes from his father's Bible.
In 2004 came the second album Aha Shake Heartbreak , which was released in 2005. It followed on from the success of the first album, but stylistically a bit calmer. A tour with Pearl Jam and Bob Dylan , among others, followed.
In March 2007 the Kings of Leon released their third album, Because of the Times . Der Spiegel counted this album among the most important albums of 2007.
After completing their 2007 tour, the band began work on their fourth album. The plan was to let it “rock harder” and “tackle the southern roots”. As producers, the Kings of Leon again resorted to Angelo Petraglia and Jacquire King, who had already recorded and produced the first three albums. On July 28, a first song from the album was made available as a free download on the band's website, and on August 5, the first single Sex on Fire was released , which immediately reached number 1 in the British charts and entered the charts internationally could place. On September 28, the album Only by the Night was released, which debuted at number one on the UK album charts. Her most successful song was her second single, Use Somebody , which made it into the top 10 in many countries around the world. It was nominated for four Grammys and won three times, including Single of the Year .
In February 2009 the Kings of Leon won the BRIT Awards for Best International Band and Best International Album ( Only by the Night ). In addition, the band was nominated at the American Music Awards 2009 in the category "Artist of the Year".
On October 15, 2010, the fifth album Come Around Sundown was released. In February 2011 they were nominated for the Echo 2011 in the category "Group international rock / pop" , as well as for "Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals" and "Best Rock Song" with the song Radioactive at the Grammy Awards 2011 , in which they came away empty-handed.
On August 1, 2011, the band broke off their entire US tour. On the official website this was justified with voice problems and exhaustion and the resumption of the tour in Vancouver , Canada was announced. However, media reports indicated clear internal band problems. Information about the continuation of the tour did not follow for several months, instead the DVD Talihina Sky was released on November 1st .; a documentation of the band's history, which, among other things, addressed Caleb's alcohol consumption.
On July 18, 2013, the first single from the new album Mechanical Bull , which was released on September 20, was released with Supersoaker . On November 22nd, the band released the music video for their single Beautiful War , in which actor Garrett Hedlund also stars. In the middle of 2014 the band experienced a shock that caused the Mechanical Bull tour to be interrupted for a short time . On the way back from a gig, the Boston bus driver had to abruptly avoid a pedestrian, with drummer Nathan Followill breaking several ribs.
At the beginning of July 2015, the band announced that they would be working on a new album. The September appearance at Rock am See in Konstanz was the only one of the band in Germany in 2015. At the end of August 2016, the Kings of Leon announced that their seventh studio album WALLS would be released on October 14th of that year. On September 10, 2016 the band gave their only concert in Germany at Lollapalooza in Treptower Park in Berlin , playing two new songs with Over and Waste a Moment .
On June 14, 2017, the band was immortalized on the Munich Olympic Walk of Stars .
