Only by the Night is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Kings of Leon , which was released on September 19, 2008.

In September 2007 vocalist Caleb Followill told NME that they were already working on tracks for the fourth album, just days after the release of the third album, Because of the Times . Recording began in February 2008 at Nashville's Blackbird Studios. On June 23, 2008, the release date, September 22, 2008, and the new title were announced.

The first single, Sex on Fire , was released on September 15, 2008. It was the first title of the Kings of Leon, which could place in the German single charts . Although the title only reached number 33, it became a popular song for interpretations at talent shows , which made it repeatedly placed in the sales charts, making it the band's most commercially successful title. So far (as of January 2013) the song has made it back into the charts 14 times and has a total of 83 chart weeks. This corresponds to position 12 of the longest listed title in the German single charts.

The song Use Somebody was released as a second single in December 2008. The song became a hit in almost every western state. It reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US and number 2 in the UK and Australia. Use Somebody reached number 9 in Germany and Switzerland and was the band's first Top 10 hit in these two countries.

The third single from the album was Revelry , which was released on March 2, 2009. The song only made it into the UK charts.

Notion was the fourth single from the album. The video was released on June 1, and the song was played on radios from June 29. The song reached number 1 on Billboard Alternative Songs.

In Australia the song Manhattan was released as the fourth single for the radio. The song stayed in the singles charts for four weeks and reached number 38.

Crawl was briefly released as a free download from the band's website a year after the album was released, but was not released as a regular single.

The album received mixed reviews. The US online website Pitchfork Media gave the album 3.8 out of 10 and PopMatters only 2 out of 10, while the album received a rating of 5/5 and 4.5 / 5 from the British The Observer and Virgin Media. Laut.de awarded four out of five stars, CD-Starts.de eight out of ten points. The website now-on.at scored 6 out of 6 possible points.

Awards and distinctions

Only by the Night received one nomination for Best Rock Album at the 51st Grammy Awards ceremony, the single Sex on Fire received two nominations for Best Rock Performance By A Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Rock Song . Sex on Fire was awarded a Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Singing on February 8th

At the 52nd Grammy Awards, the song Use Somebody won the Grammy for Record of the Year, Best Rock Song, and the same Grammy that won the single Sex On Fire .

Commercial win

The album became a huge hit in the UK. At the end of September 2008 the album debuted at number one in the UK album charts, with sales of over 220,000 copies. In February 2009, Only By The Night was confirmed to be currently the UK's best-selling digital album, surpassing Amy Winehouse's Back to Black . It sold 1,181,640 copies in 2008, when Only by the Night became the third best-selling album of the year, and reached a similar level of sales in 2009, when it sold 1,078,555, and became the fifth best-selling album of the year. The album has sold more than 2.5 million copies in the UK and was certified eight times platinum . As of December 26, 2010, Only by the Night had been in the Top 75 for 118 consecutive weeks and is currently still on the current charts.

In Australia , the album was certified nine times platinum and sold over 630,000 copies. The album was the best-selling album there of 2008. The album was also a success in New Zealand , where it was in the top ten for more than thirty consecutive weeks, including nine weeks at number one. It went platinum four times and became the second best-selling album in 2008.

In the US, the album debuted at number five on the Billboard 200. After 50 weeks in the charts, the album managed to top its highest position and reached number four on the charts. It went platinum and has sold over two million times to date.

The album sold 6.2 million times worldwide.
