White Lion was an American rock band founded in New York in 1983 by the Danish singer Mike Tramp and the American guitarist Vito Bratta. They dedicated themselves to the melodic hard rock of the eighties , which was increasingly emerging in their time .
biography
Fight to Survive - The Beginnings
In 1982 singer Mike Tramp moved from Denmark to New York. A short time later he met guitarist Vito Bratta and they decided to form a rock band called White Lion. They won bassist Bruce Terkildsen and drummer Mike Arbeny for their project. At the end of 1983, a bassist, Bruno Ravel, joined them, which is why they recorded their debut album Fight To Survive that same year , which their record company Elektra Records did not like and therefore initially remained unreleased. During the studio recording there was a line-up change: Bruce Terkildsen, Bruno Ravel and Mike Arbeny left the band, bassist Felix Robinson and drummer Nicki Capozzi joined them.
The album Fight to Survive was bought by RCA and released in Japan in 1984. The American independent label Grand Slamm Records released it on November 9, 1985 in the USA. Because of the disputes with the record company and the economic uncertainty of the band, Capozzi and Robinson left White Lion and were replaced by drummers Greg D'Angelo (ex- Anthrax ) and Dave Spitz (brother of the anthrax guitarist Dan Spitz). After just a few weeks, Dave Spitz decided to leave the band and switch to Black Sabbath . Then James Lomenzo came on as a bass guitarist.
The climb
In 1987 White Lion signed a recording deal with Atlantic Records and on June 21 of the same year their album Pride was released . The first single Wait was released on June 1, 1987 and went unnoticed on the shelves for seven months. For the next year and a half, they toured supporting bands such as Aerosmith , Ozzy Osbourne , Stryper , KISS and AC / DC . During their tour with AC / DC, the band managed to climb to number six on the charts with the single release of their song Wait . The album Pride also reached a chart position. Pride climbed to number eleven on the longplayer charts and stayed in the Billboard Top 200 for a full year. In August 1988 the second single Tell Me reached number 58. The third single, When the Children Cry , reached number three. The success of the three singles resulted in more than 2,000,000 albums being sold.
The beginning of the end
In August 1989, White Lion released their third album Big Game , which contained the singles Little Fighter , Cry for Freedom and Radar Love (a cover of Golden Earring ). The album quickly went gold, but without a real single hit it only reached number 19. The album Mane Attraction was released in the summer of 1991. Musically, it should go back to the roots, so to melodic hard rock with catchy guitar riffs . But it was not accepted by the fans and, like the two previously released albums, did not make it into the top 20. Greg D'Angelo and James Lomenzo left the band shortly after the release of Mane Attraction due to "musical differences". White Lion engaged bassist Tommy T-Bone Caradonna and later Megadeth drummer Jimmy DeGrasso . After the tour for the album, Tramp and Bratta decided in September 1991 to break up the band.
Mike Tramp's White Lion
In 2003 Mike Tramp tried to reunite the band with Vito Bratta. But the attempt failed because of Bratta's indignation. In March 2005, Mike Tramp toured America with Mike Tramp's White Lion for two months. The best recordings of these concerts were released as a double live CD Rocking the USA . In 2006 he toured Europe as well.
White Lion with Mike Tramp
In March 2008 Frontiers Records released the new studio album Return of the Pride with Mike Tramp under the old band name White Lion. Other musicians are: Jamie Law (guitar), Troy Patrick Farrell (drums), EJ Curse (bass) and Henning Wanner (keyboards).
