The Oracle Park is a baseball - Stadium in the American US city of San Francisco , California . This is where the San Francisco Giants from Major League Baseball (MLB) are based. The ball park was built directly on the San Francisco Bay . Before March 1, 2006, the stadium was called SBC Park , Pacific Bell Park until late 2003, and AT&T Park until early 2019 . Before that, Candlestick Park , a multipurpose stadium from 1960 in the southeast of the city, was the home ground of the Giants from 1960 to 1999 . The San Francisco 49ers ( NFL , 1971-2013) also played their home games there. The new arena for the Golden State Warriors ( NBA ) basketball team , the Chase Center, will be built by 2019 only about a mile south of Oracle Park .

history

The facility was completed in 2000 and since 1962 it was the first stadium in the USA to be completely privately financed. The construction costs amounted to 357 million  US dollars (now 519,617,476 US dollars).

features

Oracle Park has a reputation for being one of the National League's most pitcher-friendly baseball parks, as the depth of the outfield limits home runs, according to ESPN .

In 2010, the park was the first MLB stadium to be awarded the LEED silver certificate for ecological construction.

In 2014, PeTA declared the park the most vegetarian-friendly stadium in the MLB. In 2011, 2006 and 2005 the AT&T Park also took first place on the list.

Rightfield and McCovey Cove

The most striking feature of the stadium is the wall at Rightfield, which is 7.3 m (24  ft ) high. The wall was built in honor of former Giants player Willie Mays , who wore the number 24. Due to its proximity to San Francisco Bay , the Rightfield Wall is only 94 meters from Home Plate. The wall is made of brick, with arches that open to the bay beyond. There are four pillars with fountains on the wall. Jets of water jump from the four pillars at the end of the national anthem, during a home run or a victory for the Giants.

Behind the stands in Rightfield is the China Basin, part of San Francisco Bay called McCovey Cove. It was named after the famous Giants first baseman Willie McCovey.

The cola bottle and the glove

The Coca-Cola Fan Lot is located behind the Leftfield grandstand. The baseball field has a 24-meter-long Coca-Cola bottle with playground slides that lights up every time the Giants home run. Directly to the right of the bottle is an oversized representation of a glove, the "Giant 1927 Old-Time Four-Fingered Baseball Glove". The glove is made of steel and glass fiber reinforced plastic .

Wireless internet

Starting in 2004, the Giants installed 122  wireless Internet connections that covered all areas and seats, and at that time created one of the largest public hotspots in the world.

Events

The MLB All-Star Game took place here on July 11, 2007, the most important baseball event in the USA after the World Series . On July 10th there was the home run derby and on July 11th the game between the All-Star teams of the National League and the American League .

Soccer games

The United States national soccer team played a friendly against Japan in 2006 at the Giants' stadium . In 2012, the MLS regular league game between the Houston Dynamo and the San Jose Earthquakes took place in the ballpark. There were also two games of the World Football Challenge and the International Champions Cup. In March 2012 there was a match between the teams from Mexico and Senegal that qualified for the Olympic football tournament .

7-a-side rugby

In 2018, the 7th Rugby World Cup took place in AT&T Park .

Concerts (selection)

The AT&T Park is also used as a concert arena. In 2012, the Vans Warped Tour stopped at the stadium on June 23 . Here occurred You Me at Six , Yellow Card , We the Kings , We Are the In Crowd , The Used , Twin Atlantic , transit , Tonight Alive , Title Fight , Taking Back Sunday , Streetlight Manifesto , Senses Fail , Kristopher Roe , Rise to Remain , Anthony Raneri , Polar Bear Club , Of Mice & Men , New Found Glory , Motionless in White , Memphis May Fire , Mayday Parade , Man Overboard , Make Do and Mend , A Loss for Words , I Am the Avalanche , The Ghost Inside , Four Year Strong , Every Time I Die , Born of Osiris , Blessthefall , Bayside , Anti-Flag , All Time Low and After the Burial . Since the Candlestick Park was closed in 2014, more and more concerts have been held in the park.
