The American League and National League winners were determined between October 5 and October 22, 2012. To this end, the two wild card winners first met in a game. The three division winners and the winner of the wild card game met in two division series matches in best-of-five mode ( ALDS or NLDS = American or National League Division Series). Then the winners of the Division Series matches played the best-of-seven from the respective league champion ( ALCS or NLCS = American or National League Championship Series ).
