The 1903 World Series was the first edition of the modern World Series , the finals of Major League Baseball . At the end of the 1903 season, the champions of the American League , the Boston Americans , and the Pittsburgh Pirates , the champions of the National League, faced each other. The Boston Americans won the Best-Of-Nine series with 5-3 wins.
Two players per team who participated in the World Series were later inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame . On the American side, Jimmy Collins and Cy Young were honored, while the Pirates honored Fred Clarke and Honus Wagner .
