It was the champion of the American League , the Kansas City Royals , and the champion of the National League , the Philadelphia Phillies . The Philadelphia Phillies won the "Best of Seven" series with 4-2 victories. For the Phillies, it was the first (and up to the 2008 season only) World Series win in the history of the franchise .

As MVP of the World Series was Mike Schmidt excellent.
