The 2006 World Series was the 102nd edition of the Major League Baseball finals . The series started on October 21, 2006 and ended on October 27, 2006. It faced the champion of the American League , the Detroit Tigers and the champion of the National League , the St. Louis Cardinals . The St. Louis Cardinals won the "Best of Seven" series in just five games. The Cardinals won Games 1, 3, 4, and 5. The Detroit Tigers could only win Game 2.
It was the third time the Tigers and Cardinals met in the World Series. In the first meeting in 1934 the Cardinals won, in the second in 1968 the Tigers. Both series went over the full seven games.
For MVP of the World Series was David Eckstein selected.
